What Happens to Your Child's SAT/AP Testing Plan When You Relocate Mid-Year

What happens to your child's SAT/AP testing plan

When your family relocates mid-year, your child's SAT and AP plans do not move automatically, but neither is lost. The two exams move in different ways:

  • AP exams are ordered by the school, so the registration stays with the old school. The new school's AP coordinator re-adds your child using a transfer code for each AP class. Under College Board policy, students who transfer in can be added at any time without a late order fee.
  • The SAT belongs to your child's own College Board account. You change the test center (and the date, if needed) online, subject to seat availability and a change fee.

What this solves: It protects your child's exam seats, avoids unnecessary fees, and keeps scores on track for Early Decision and Regular Decision deadlines.

What to do this week:

  1. Ask the old school to mark your child as Transfer Out.
  2. Request a transfer code (not a join code) from the new school's AP coordinator for every AP subject.
  3. Move the SAT registration to a Hanoi test center.
  4. Plan backward from your child's earliest college application deadline, not from your moving date.

For families arriving in Hanoi from Bengaluru, Seoul, Shanghai or Hong Kong, the paperwork is usually manageable. What trips families up is timing. A December transfer raises different issues than a March one, and a Grade 11 student faces different risks than a Grade 12 student with an Early Decision application due.

This guide also gives you a move-month × grade scenario matrix, a ready-to-send message for your new school's AP coordinator, and an interactive Relocation Risk Checker. It also walks through the True North Transition Map, the deadline-first method our counseling team uses with families who arrive mid-year.

What Is the Fastest Way to Protect SAT and AP Plans During a Move?

Start by treating the two exams separately. AP registration belongs to the school; SAT registration belongs to the student. That one distinction determines who acts, when, and what it costs.

Hạng mục AP Exams SAT
Who owns the registration The school (AP coordinator) The student (College Board account)
Who makes the change New school's AP coordinator issues a transfer code Parent/student changes test center online

Can Your Child Still Take AP Exams After Moving Past the November Deadline?

Yes. College Board policy lets a new school add a transfer student to its AP exam order at any time, without a late order fee. The November deadline applies to students who were already enrolled, not to students who transfer in.

It's often the first thing relocating parents worry about, and it's usually one of the easiest things to fix, as long as the right code is used. If you're new to the program itself, start with what the AP program is and how it fits into a US-style curriculum.

How Do Transfer Codes Differ From Join Codes?

A transfer code enrolls a transfer student and waives the late order fee. A join code is for students enrolling the normal way. Use a join code after the November deadline, and your child may be charged a late fee for every section they join.

Feature Transfer code Join code
Issued by AP coordinator only Teacher or AP coordinator
Purpose Adds a transfer student without late fee Regular class enrollment
Number needed One per class section or exam-only section One per section
Risk if misused None Late order fee per section after November deadline

According to College Board, a school can add a transfer student to its AP exam order without a late order fee, regardless of when the student transfers. The AP coordinator, and only the coordinator, must provide a unique transfer code for each class section. If a transfer student receives a join code instead, they may be unable to enroll, or may incur a late fee for each section joined after the November deadline.

COMMON MISTAKES WHEN TRANSFERRING AP REGISTRATION:
  • Creating a new College Board account after the move: Families sometimes open a fresh account with a new email address. This splits AP and SAT records across two profiles. Always log in with the original account and update the email address instead.
  • Assuming the transfer is done once the code is entered: After joining with the transfer code, have your child log in to My AP. Check that every section appears under the new school and that each exam shows as registered. If anything is missing, contact the AP coordinator immediately, not in April.
  • Registering at an outside test center for a subject the new school already offers: Before paying a test center, confirm with the new school's AP coordinator which exams your child is already ordered for. Duplicate registrations create confusion and may cost unnecessary fees.

Does the Old School Need to Mark "Transfer Out" First?

No. Enrolling with a transfer code doesn't depend on anything the old school does, so your child can join the new section right away.

The old school should still set your child to Transfer Out, because that removes the exam fee from its invoice. Whether you get a refund is up to the old school's own policy, so ask in writing.

What Changes After Mid-March?

From mid-March, the new school has to contact AP Services for Educators to unlock its exam order. Your child can still be added, but it takes longer. If you're moving in March or April, contact the new school before you arrive.

What If the New School Doesn't Teach Your Child's AP Subject?

Your child can still sit the exam. AP authorized test centers exist for students whose own school doesn't offer the exam they need. The trade-off: your child studies independently for the rest of the year.

Which Option Fits Your Child?

Option Best for Main risk
Switch to a related AP course at the new school Grade 10–11, early-year moves Transcript shows a course change
Self-study + authorized test center Grade 11–12, strong in the subject No teacher support for 4–5 months
Drop the exam Weak subject, heavy load Loses a data point for admissions

For the 2026–27 cycle, schools must add self-study students, and students whose subject isn't offered, to their exam order by March 12, 2027. Test centers set their own registration windows, and many close earlier than that.

Can Your Child Take Different AP Exams at Different Centers?

Yes, with one firm condition: every registration must use the same College Board account. That account is what ties your child's SAT and AP scores together, no matter how many countries they test in.

Don't open a second account after the move. Duplicate accounts can split score records and make score sending messy.

What's Different About the 2027 AP Exam Schedule?

The 2027 calendar is set, and start times now follow local time zones. Check the exam times for Hanoi rather than reusing last year's schedule from India or Korea.

The May 2027 AP Exams run May 3–7 and May 10–14, with late testing May 17–21. Beginning with the 2027 administration, start times follow updated time-zone schedules. Students may register for different AP Exams at different test centers, provided they use the same College Board account.

Source: Prometric, College Board AP – India (authorized AP test center) · Evidence type: Official policy

Most AP exams now run in Bluebook, College Board's digital testing app, and some test centers ask students to bring their own approved device. Confirm this well before May.

At True North International School, AP courses are included in International Program tuition. [CẦN XÁC MINH: danh sách môn AP năm 2026–27 và việc tổ chức thi cho học sinh chuyển đến.] You can look up any AP-authorized school on the AP Course Ledger, College Board's official list.

How Do You Move an SAT Registration to Hanoi?

Log in to your College Board account, open the registration, and choose Change test center or Change date. Changing the test center edits your existing registration, so you don't have to start over.

How Much Does It Cost in 2026–27?

Fee item Amount (2026–27) Note
SAT registration $68 Base fee
International fee $43 Applies when testing in Vietnam
Total for Vietnam $111
Test center/date change ~$29–34 Sources disagree; verify on College Board's official fees page

Where Can Your Child Take the SAT in Hanoi?

Hanoi has several SAT test centers. Published lists include IIG Vietnam offices, UNIS Hanoi, Reigate Grammar School Vietnam, Paul American School Hanoi and International School @ParkCity.

A published 2026 guide from a Vietnam-based English center lists more than ten SAT test centers in Hanoi, including IIG Vietnam offices, several international schools, and True North International School at Lot TH-03, Mo Lao Urban Area, Ha Dong. Test center availability changes by date, so confirm on College Board's official Test Center Search before registering.

Source: ECE English Center (third-party list) · Evidence type: Single case

In March 2023, IIG Vietnam signed an agreement with College Board to run SAT, PSAT and AP test centers in Vietnam, and College Board has said it plans to expand testing beyond the major cities.

Always check the current list on College Board's Test Center Search, because the centers on offer vary by test date.

Why Should You Register for Fall Dates Early?

Fall dates are typically in high demand, since many Grade 12 students want scores in hand before application deadlines. Register as soon as your move date is confirmed, and have a backup center in mind.

Coming From Mainland China: Do You Still Need to Fly to Hong Kong?

Not from Hanoi. Mainland Chinese students have historically traveled to Hong Kong to test, where SAT registration runs through the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA). That pattern comes from older reporting. Living in Hanoi, your child can test locally.

Which SAT Date Should Your Child Target After Relocating?

Work backward from the earliest application deadline and treat your moving date as the last piece of the puzzle. That's the core of the True North Transition Map: deadline first, test date second, school start date third.

For Grade 12 students, the Early Decision calendar, combined with each college's score-acceptance policy, determines the last SAT date that's still usable.

Grade 12 Students Applying This Fall (2026)

SAT date Registration deadline Late deadline Fit
November 7, 2026 October 23 October 27 Some ED/EA colleges accept; confirm each one
December 5, 2026 November 20 November 24 Regular Decision; usually too late for ED
PRO TIP FROM TRUE NORTH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL: College Board typically sets deadlines in US Eastern Time, not Hanoi time. An October 23 deadline at 11:59 p.m. ET falls on the morning of October 24 in Hanoi (UTC+7). After US clocks change on November 1, the gap grows by one hour. Families arriving from India or Korea often calculate from their old time zone and miss the window by hours. Our advice: treat the evening of the deadline date, Hanoi time, as your real cutoff. Card payments from Vietnamese banks can also fail on the first attempt with international merchants, so leave a buffer for a second try.

As of October 2026, the October 3 test date has passed. If your child needs a November score for an Early Decision application, check each college's policy this week.

Grade 11 Students

Plan for two attempts. Many colleges superscore, combining your child's best section scores across test dates, and Score Choice lets you send only the dates you choose, unless a college asks for your complete testing record.

Spring 2027 SAT dates have been announced as anticipated but not yet confirmed, so check College Board before you book.

Which US Colleges Require SAT or ACT Scores for 2026–27?

A growing number of highly selective colleges now require scores, including six of the eight Ivy League schools for 2026–27. Your child's college list is what decides whether the SAT belongs in your relocation plan at all.

Policy Meaning 2026–27 examples
Test-required Must submit SAT or ACT Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Brown, Dartmouth, Cornell, Penn (hardship waivers), MIT, Caltech, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown
Test-flexible Requires a score, accepts alternatives Carnegie Mellon (most colleges accept AP/IB; CS requires SAT/ACT)
Test-optional Scores not required Columbia, Princeton, Duke, Notre Dame
Test-blind Scores not considered University of California campuses

Yale announced in May 2026 that it would require the SAT or ACT. Princeton and Columbia remain test-optional for 2026–27 and will require scores starting with the 2027–28 cycle. Policies shift often, so confirm each one on the college's own admissions page.

Can AP Scores Replace the SAT?

Only at test-flexible colleges. Yale and Brown won't accept AP or IB in place of the SAT or ACT, while Carnegie Mellon accepts AP in most programs. For background, see our guide: what is AP?

Is "Optional" Really Optional?

Submission rates remain high at selective test-optional colleges. That tells you what applicants are doing, not whether scores are what get them in.

One admissions analysis citing Common App reporting estimates that roughly 80–85% of applicants to selective test-optional colleges now submit SAT or ACT scores, up from about 55–60% in the 2021–2022 cycle. This trend reflects what applicants choose to do. It does not show that submitting scores causes admission.

How Do Admissions Officers Read Two Transcripts From Two Countries?

In our counselors' experience, a move on its own rarely hurts an application, and a well-documented transition is often read as resilience. An unexplained move is what raises questions. That's our counselors' read, not something any public dataset measures. The counselor letter is where the context gets explained.

How the move is explained is only part of the picture. Grades after the move, course rigor and each college's own review process all shape how a transcript is read.

What Should the Counselor Submit?

The current school's counselor submits the Common App mid-year report and writes the counselor recommendation. In most cases, transcripts from both schools go with the application.

Document Submitted by What it should explain
Counselor recommendation Current school counselor Reason for move, course changes, adaptation
Mid-year report Current school counselor Grades at the new school
Previous transcript Previous school Full record before the move
Additional Information Student Brief, factual context
PRO TIP FROM TRUE NORTH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL: Before your last day at the old school, ask your child's strongest teacher (ideally an AP or Grade 11 core-subject teacher) to commit to a recommendation letter. A teacher at the new school has known your child for only weeks. A teacher who taught them for a year or more can write with real evidence. Once you leave, response times often slow down. Also collect three documents while you still have easy access: the old school's school profile (which explains its grading scale), the AP course syllabi, and a note on which units your child has already completed. These help the new counselor evaluate the transcript and help the new AP teacher close content gaps instead of repeating them.

Why Does Academic Transcript Evaluation Matter?

India's CBSE and ICSE boards, Korean schools and US-style programs all grade differently. A clear academic transcript evaluation at the new school helps cut down on GPA confusion, though every college still applies its own method. Ask the counselor how the school profile explains credits your child brings in.

IMPORTANT FOR GRADE 12 STUDENTS WHO APPLIED BEFORE MOVING:
  • Notify every college of the school change: If your child submitted Early Decision or Early Action applications before the move, the colleges still list the old school. Send a short update through each college's applicant portal with the new school's name, CEEB school code and the new counselor's contact details.
  • Agree on who sends the mid-year report: The old and new counselors can both assume the other is responsible. Ask both, in writing, to confirm who submits the mid-year report and the final transcript.
  • Redirect SAT score reports: Score reports sent before the move remain valid. Your child does not need to resend them. Only update the high school in the College Board profile so future reports and AP scores reach the correct counselor.

True North International School's first graduating class received offers from more than 30 international universities, including Cornell, UCL and the University of Melbourne. International Program students have scored 1550 (2023) and 1570 (2024) on the SAT. That's one graduating class, and results depend on many individual factors. They aren't a forecast for any transfer student.

What Country-Specific Rules Catch Families Off Guard?

ID, accommodations and score security cause the most avoidable test-day stress. Of the three, ID is the most urgent: a student without valid ID that matches their registration can be turned away at the door.

Which ID Should Your Child Bring?

Origin Known rule Action
India Authorized AP centers in India may impose stricter ID rules; many state they accept only an original, valid passport Keep the passport name identical to the College Board account
Vietnam (SAT/AP) Follow College Board ID policy and the admission ticket Foreign nationals: bring an original passport [CẦN XÁC MINH]
All Name must match the registration exactly Fix name mismatches before booking

PRO TIP FROM TRUE NORTH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL: Name mismatches follow predictable patterns by nationality. Indian students sometimes register with initials ("R. Kumar") while the passport shows the full name, or have a single-name passport. Korean students may list the family name first in one system and last in another. Chinese students often use an English nickname at school that never appears in the passport. Before booking any test in Hanoi, open the College Board account and the passport side by side. Make sure the first and last name fields match the passport exactly, in the same order. Fix differences through College Board before the test, never at the test-center door.

Do SSD Accommodations Transfer With Your Child?

College Board accommodations approvals are generally tied to the student, not the school, but the new school's SSD coordinator still has to link your child in SSD Online. Confirm the exact steps with College Board and start early. Delays usually happen when nobody owns the handover.

Families Moving From Korea or China: Should You Worry About Score Holds?

It has happened once, in 2017, but it was a one-off, not a standing policy.

In 2017, College Board placed October SAT scores on hold for test-takers who were current residents of Korea or China, citing specific information about possible cheating. The hold came just before many colleges' November 1 early application deadlines. This was a single historical incident, not a standing policy.

Source: PBS NewsHour · Evidence type: Single case (historical)

The practical takeaway: get at least one test date in before your key deadline.

When Is Holding Onto the SAT Schedule the Wrong Priority?

Sometimes the SAT should wait. If your child is aiming for test-optional or test-blind colleges, keeping their GPA steady and helping them settle in can matter more than any test date.

Targeting UC or Test-Optional Colleges?

The University of California system doesn't consider SAT scores at all. If your child's list leans that way, squeezing in a November test during a move may add stress without improving their chances. Put the energy into grades at the new school.

A counterpoint worth weighing: according to Brian Eufinger, co-founder of Edison Prep, test scores are often still needed to compete for top merit scholarships, even at colleges that remain test-optional for admission. If financial aid matters to your family, check each college's scholarship criteria before deciding to skip the SAT.

Should a Grade 12 Student Move Schools in the Fall?

Not necessarily. Finishing the semester at the old school, or studying online for a while, can lower the academic risk: recommendations, mid-year reporting and course continuity are all easier to keep on track. It has its own costs, though, from time apart as a family to the limits of online study.

We'd give the same advice even though it means a later start at schools like ours. Getting the timing right matters more than starting fast.

"No Late Fee" Doesn't Mean "No Risk"

The fee waiver solves one problem, but only one. If the new school doesn't teach the course, your child still has to self-study. Orders after mid-March still need AP Services, and a fully booked SAT month stays fully booked.

Troubleshooting SAT and AP Plans After a Mid-Year Move: Quick Answers

What should we do if the AP transfer code doesn't work when my child tries to join a class?

The usual cause is a join code entered instead of a transfer code, or a code for the wrong class section. Fix it in three steps:

    • Ask the new school's AP coordinator to reconfirm the transfer code for that exact section. Only the coordinator can see transfer codes, not teachers.
    • Have your child log in to My AP with their original College Board account, not a new one.
    • If it still fails, the coordinator can contact AP Services for Educators. This is especially relevant after mid-March, when exam orders are locked.

My child was charged an AP late order fee after transferring schools. How do we fix it?

College Board policy states that schools can add transfer students at any time without a late order fee. A late fee usually means the student enrolled with a join code instead of a transfer code after the November ordering deadline. Ask the new school's AP coordinator to check how your child was enrolled in AP Registration and Ordering. If a join code was used, the coordinator should correct the enrollment and contact AP Services for Educators. Separately, confirm that the old school marked your child as "Transfer Out" so the fee doesn't stay on the old school's invoice.

What can we do if every SAT test center in Hanoi is full for our target date?

Seats at Hanoi SAT centers often fill for October–December dates. Try these options in order:

    • Check College Board's Test Center Search daily, because seats can reopen when other students cancel.
    • Consider a center in Ho Chi Minh City or Da Nang if a short trip is feasible.
    • Move to the next SAT date, but first confirm that each target college will accept that score before its deadline.
    • For test-optional colleges, weigh whether a later score is worth submitting at all.

What happens if the name on my child's College Board account doesn't match their passport?

A mismatch can prevent your child from being admitted to the SAT or AP testing room, because test centers check ID against the registration. Common causes for relocating families include initials instead of full names (common in Indian records), reversed family-name order (common with Korean names) and English nicknames (common among Chinese students). Correct the name in the College Board account before test day so it matches the original passport exactly, in the same order. If the system doesn't allow the change, contact College Board customer service well before the test date. Test-day staff cannot fix it.

My child's AP exams don't appear in My AP after the transfer. What should we check?

This usually means the enrollment at the new school is incomplete. Check three things:

    • Section enrollment: Your child must join each AP class section with a transfer code, one code per section.
    • Order submission: If the new school had already submitted its exam order, the AP coordinator must submit an order change. Until then, exams may not show as registered.
    • Account: Make sure your child is logged in to the original College Board account.

Ask the new AP coordinator to verify the order in AP Registration and Ordering.

What if my child's SAT score will arrive after an Early Decision deadline because of the move?

Contact each college's admissions office before the deadline. Some colleges accept November SAT scores for Early Decision or Early Action, while others do not. Ask whether you can list the upcoming test date on the application and send the score when it is released. If a college won't accept the later score, your options are:

    • Apply with existing scores, if any.
    • Apply without scores at a test-optional college.
    • Move the application to Regular Decision.

Test-required colleges, such as Harvard, Stanford and Yale for 2026–27, still need a score to complete the review.

What should we do if the new school doesn't show my child's SAT or AP accommodations?

College Board accommodations approvals generally stay with the student after a school change, but they must be linked to the new school. Ask the new school's SSD coordinator to add your child in College Board's SSD Online system using the existing approval. Bring documentation of the original approval to that meeting. Start this right after enrollment, because accommodations must be in place before registration deadlines and exam orders are finalized. If the new school has no SSD coordinator, contact College Board's Services for Students with Disabilities directly.
