A Parent's Guide to Advanced Placement at International Schools in Hanoi
Posted On: 28 October, 2026
A Parent’s Guide to Advanced Placement at International Schools in Hanoi for 2026-27. Learn what AP is, how US, UK and Asian universities read AP scores, how many courses your child actually needs, and what AP exams cost in Vietnam.
Advanced Placement (AP) is a set of college-level courses and exams run by College Board, a US nonprofit. Your child takes an AP course in high school, sits a standardized exam in May, and receives a score from 1 to 5.
What happens to that score depends on where your child applies:
US universities read it as evidence of academic rigor, and many grant credit for a 3 or higher.
UK universities treat a set of high scores as a formal entry requirement.
Many universities in Vietnam and elsewhere in Asia list AP as a recognized international qualification.
Why it matters for families in Hanoi: AP gives your child an academic record that universities in many countries understand, even if you move again or haven't settled on a country yet. Each score is held by College Board, not tied to one school.
What you need to get started:
A school that teaches College Board–authorized AP courses and hosts the exams.
A clear idea of which university system you're aiming for.
The deadline: exams for May 2027 must be ordered by November 13, 2026.

Who This Guide Is For
Hanoi is home to diplomats, technology and manufacturing managers, and large Korean and Japanese business communities. Indian and Chinese families join them, alongside Vietnamese families planning to study overseas.
Many of these parents grew up with CBSE or ICSE, the Gaokao, the Suneung, Japanese university entrance exams or Vietnam's national graduation exam. In those systems, one final exam decides almost everything.
AP works differently. It builds a record from separate courses and separate exam scores, and every country's universities read that record in their own way.
Kiều Trọng Tú compiled this guide from College Board's 2026-27 data, and True North's academic leadership reviewed it. Beyond the basics, it includes three things you can use right away:
A step-by-step planning worksheet (the AP Compass).
A checklist for verifying any school's AP claims.
Real admissions outcomes from one Hanoi AP school.
What Is AP, and How Is It Different from a US High School Diploma?
AP is a collection of individual subjects, not a diploma. Each AP course is part of an American high school curriculum, while the diploma itself comes from an accredited school.
AP course grade vs. AP exam score
Your child gets two separate results:
The course grade (A, B, C) comes from the school and appears on the transcript. Many schools use a weighted GPA, so an A in an AP class counts for more than an A in a standard class.
The exam score (1–5) comes from College Board after the May exam.

United States: rigor in context
US universities see AP as proof that a student took on challenging work. They judge that rigor against what the student's own school offers.
Evidence · Expert opinion
A former University of Pennsylvania admissions officer says he never counted a student's AP courses as a selling point in committee. He adds that students are not penalised when their school does not offer AP. This reflects one officer's experience, not a published university policy.
In the UK, AP scores are a hard condition of entry. A UCAS conditional offer spells out the scores your child must reach. If they fall short, the university can withdraw the offer.
Cambridge expects five or more AP scores of 5.
Math-heavy Cambridge courses require AP Calculus BC.
Oxford typically asks for 5s in at least three APs, according to published summaries. Requirements differ by course, so always check the course page.
In effect, a set of 5s does the job that A-level grades do for British students.
Evidence · Official policy
The University of Cambridge expects applicants to present five or more AP scores of 5. Any Cambridge course that requires A-level Mathematics requires AP Calculus BC.
PRO TIP FROM TRUE NORTH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL: For UK applications, timing matters as much as scores. Plan the subjects a UK university requires for Grade 11. Your child then applies in Grade 12 with real scores already in hand, rather than predicted ones, and the offer conditions become easier to meet. Don't rush those subjects into Grade 9 or 10, though. Cambridge expects AP results to be recent, typically taken within about two years of starting the course. A score that is too early can count for less.
Asia and Vietnam: recognition varies
VinUniversity lists AP among its recognized international qualifications. From 2026, it also requires an overall IELTS score of 6.5, with no band below 6.0.
In India, several private universities, including Ashoka, FLAME and Krea, are reported to view AP favorably. In Korea, Japan, China, Singapore and Hong Kong, recognition depends on the institution. Check each university individually rather than assuming a national rule.

How Many AP Courses Does My Child Really Need?
Probably fewer than you fear, because context matters more than the raw total.
Taking all 7 APs a school offers typically signals as much ambition as taking 10 out of 25. In counselors' experience, scores of 4 or 5 in subjects linked to the intended major tend to carry more weight than a long list of AP titles.
AP is also only one part of a holistic review. GPA, essays, recommendations and activities all shape the final decision.

Start planning around the destination in Grade 9. AP may be one program, but it calls for three different subject strategies depending on whether you're aiming for the US, the UK or Asia.
The AP Compass: A Four-Step Planning Worksheet
At True North International School, AP planning starts with a simple framework we call the AP Compass, a nod to the school's motto, "Discover your True North." Work through it at home before you meet any counselor.

PRO TIP FROM TRUE NORTH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL: If your child is strong in maths, plan for AP Calculus BC rather than AB from Grade 9. The BC exam also reports a separate AB subscore, so a student who struggles with the extra BC content still leaves with a usable Calculus AB result. BC is also the version Cambridge requires for maths-based courses. The catch: BC needs a full precalculus foundation first. Families who decide in Grade 11 are often too late to fit it in.
Burnout is a real risk. Avoid stacking SAT prep, IELTS and four new APs into the same semester.
Will My Child Cope with AP If English Isn't Their First Language?
Yes, as long as subjects are sequenced well. Strong academic English is essential for top scores in reading- and writing-heavy APs, but it matters much less in math and science.

One caution on heritage languages: native and heritage speakers shape the score distributions for AP Chinese and AP Japanese. Admissions readers know this, so a 5 in a heritage language may not carry the same weight as a 5 in Calculus BC.

COSTLY MISTAKES TO AVOID:
Over-ordering "just in case": An exam cancelled after the November deadline still costs 40 USD. Decide on each subject with your child's teacher before ordering, not after.
Panicking over a timetable clash: If two AP exams fall in the same time slot, your child doesn't have to drop one. College Board offers a late-testing schedule for exam conflicts, usually at no extra fee. Tell the AP coordinator early so the late exam is arranged.
Forgetting the UK score send: UK conditional offers depend on official scores. When scores are released in July, check straight away that the report has reached the university holding the offer. Don't assume the school sends it automatically.
Leaving exam-only registration too late: Authorised test centres often set their own deadline before College Board's 13 November cutoff. Self-studying students should contact the centre in September or early October.
What is the full cost picture?
Exam fees are only part of the bill. Ask every school three questions: Is AP tuition included? Is there a per-subject AP fee? Does the school host the exams?
At True North International School, AP courses are included in International Program tuition, while the Bilingual Program charges 18 million VND per AP subject. Both figures appear on the school's published fee schedule.
PRO TIP FROM TRUE NORTH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL: Don't pay to send official AP score reports to every US university on your child's list. Most US universities accept self-reported AP scores on the application. They only ask for the official report after your child enrols, to award credit. Each year, College Board includes one free score send if you choose the recipient in My AP before the June deadline. Use it for the university that will actually decide credit or a UK offer. Pay for extra reports only when an admissions office asks.
Can students from schools without AP take the exams in Hanoi?
Yes. They can register as exam-only students at an authorized test center. Contact the center well before mid-November.
How Are Digital AP Exams in Bluebook Different?
Most AP exams now run on Bluebook, the same digital testing app College Board uses for the SAT. In May 2026, 28 exams ran on Bluebook: 16 fully digital and 12 hybrid.

Are AP Capstone and the AP International Diploma Worth It?
Yes, for the skills they build, not for the certificate itself.
AP Capstone is made up of AP Seminar and AP Research, which train students to research a question and build an argument. Cambridge welcomes Capstone but doesn't count it toward its five-score requirement.
The AP International Diploma (APID) requires scores of 3 or higher on at least five AP exams across four content areas. College Board awards it automatically. It's a supplementary certificate and does not replace a high school diploma.

The Contrarian View: Why More APs and Higher Pass Rates Aren't Always Better
More APs don't automatically make a student better prepared for university. Some education analysts point to more rigorous studies that find little advantage for AP students, and suggest that high school AP classes rarely match a real college course.
Some of that gap may simply reflect who chooses AP: students who were already strong before they started.
Credit isn't guaranteed either. Many universities cap or restrict the AP credit they award, so don't build your university budget around it.
When IB or A-levels may fit better
If you have no fixed destination, or you want one complete diploma, look seriously at IB or A-levels. A student with five strong AP scores who misses the APID isn't judged any worse for it, so AP's "complete credential" advantage is weaker than the marketing suggests.
How to read a 90%+ pass rate
University faculty consider it normal for 60% to 80% of students to score 3 or higher. A figure above 90% can be genuine. It can also reflect selective admissions or a policy of entering only the strongest students. Ask which it is.
Evidence · School-reported, single cases
Two Hanoi schools publish high AP results. Concordia reports that 90.77% of its 2025 AP exams scored 3 or higher. True North reports a 4.4/5 average AP score and 98% scoring 3 or higher in AY2023-24. Both figures are self-reported by individual schools and are not independently audited benchmarks.
Apply the same test to every school, True North included. Treat any one school's self-reported data as a single case, not a benchmark, and ask how many students sat each exam.
Parent Checklist: How to Verify a School's AP Claims
Take this checklist on every school tour. It covers the three foundations that separate a real AP program from a label in a brochure.
School AP Verification Scorecard
Tick each question the school answers "Yes" with evidence. Add notes during the tour, then print the card to compare schools.
Why it matters: the listing proves each course passed the AP Course Audit. Red flag: "We follow AP content."
Why it matters: students test on familiar ground without external centre fees. Red flag: students must test elsewhere.
Why it matters: screening who sits the exam inflates pass rates. Red flag: "Only ready students sit."
Why it matters: it exposes figures built on very small groups. Red flag: only one headline percentage.
Why it matters: US, UK and Asian universities read AP differently. Red flag: no dedicated counselor.
Why it matters: AP is not a diploma; accreditation validates the diploma itself. Red flag: a vague answer.
This scorecard is a general guide for parents. Ask each school for written evidence, and verify course authorisation directly on College Board's AP Course Ledger.
How True North International School Approaches AP
True North teaches 20 AP subjects within an American curriculum built on the Common Core and NGSS standards. ACS WASC accredited the school across all grade levels in May 2024, and it is a member of EARCOS.
The leadership team has worked in schools across three continents:
Gerald Schoen, Head of School: 23+ years leading schools in the US, Mexico, Korea, China and Thailand.
Robert Marto, Director of the International Program: has led CIS and WASC accreditation teams.
What do the first graduates' results show?
True North's first Grade 12 class, graduating in the school's fifth year, received offers from more than 30 international universities, including:
Cornell
UCL
University of Melbourne
University of Sydney
Pratt

Scholarships totaled US$3,000,000 in the US and A$80,000 in Australia, along with awards of up to 70% at VinUni and up to 40% at Fulbright University Vietnam. International Program students scored 1550/1600 (2023) and 1570/1600 (2024) on the SAT.
These results come from one graduating class at one school, so treat them as a case study rather than a promise. They also reflect each student's starting point, family resources and preparation outside the classroom, not the program alone.
The parent community is genuinely international, with Vietnamese, Korean, Indian and German families. One Indian parent noted clear progress in their child's soft skills and presentation. A Korean parent described how easily Vietnamese and Korean students mix.

Plan Your Child's AP Pathway
AP works best when you plan early and plan around a destination. Fill in the AP Compass, run the verification checklist on each school, and then sit down with a counselor with your answers in hand.
Kiều Trọng Tú wrote this guide using College Board's 2026-27 data. To map out your child's AP pathway, book a one-to-one consultation or a campus tour with True North International School:

AP Troubleshooting: Quick Answers for Parents
My child missed the 13 November 2026 AP ordering deadline. Can they still sit the May 2027 exams?
Yes, in most cases. College Board accepts late orders between 14 November 2026 and 12 March 2027. Each late exam costs 40 USD on top of the standard 129 USD fee in Vietnam. Contact your school's AP coordinator immediately, because schools and test centres can set earlier internal cutoffs. After 12 March 2027, new orders are generally no longer possible for that May session, and your child would wait until May 2028.
Two of my child's AP exams are scheduled at the same time. Does one have to be dropped?
No. College Board runs a late-testing schedule for students with exam conflicts. Your child takes one exam on the regular date and the other on an alternate date, usually at no extra fee. Tell the AP coordinator as soon as the conflict appears. The school must arrange the late-testing exam in advance; it is not automatic.
My child scored a 2 on an AP exam. Will it hurt their university applications?
Usually not much. Most US universities let applicants self-report AP scores and do not require every score to be listed. The AP course grade on the transcript often carries more weight. Options:
Retake the exam the following May. For the AP International Diploma, the highest score counts.
Strengthen the profile with stronger scores in subjects linked to the intended major.
For UK applications, a weak score in a required subject matters more. Discuss subject choices with a counselor.
Our family is relocating before May. How can my child still take their AP exams?
AP exams are taken at the school or authorised test centre that ordered them. If you move before May, ask your current AP coordinator and the new school's coordinator to agree who will order and administer each exam. Do this early, because orders after 13 November 2026 incur a 40 USD late fee per exam. Scores already earned remain in your child's College Board account and can be sent to universities from any country.
My child's school in Hanoi doesn't offer AP. How can they take AP exams?
Your child can register as an exam-only candidate at a College Board–authorised AP test centre. Several international schools in Hanoi, including True North International School in Hà Đông, host AP exams. Steps:
Contact the test centre in September or early October.
Confirm subjects, fees and the centre's own deadline.
Self-study using College Board course descriptions and Bluebook practice tests.
My child missed an AP score required by a UK conditional offer. What happens now?
The university decides. Some universities still confirm a place when a student narrowly misses one condition, especially if other scores are strong. Others decline the offer. Contact the admissions office as soon as scores are released in July, and make sure the official AP score report has reached them. If the place is declined, UCAS Clearing may offer alternative courses with available places.
How can I check whether a school's AP courses are genuinely authorised?
Search the school on College Board's AP Course Ledger. The ledger lists every course that has passed the AP Course Audit, which is College Board's review of the syllabus and teaching. A course missing from the ledger cannot carry the "AP" label on a transcript. Also ask whether the school is an authorised AP test centre and whether every AP student sits the exam. Both answers affect how reliable a school's published pass rates are.
