IB Diploma vs A-Levels: a comparison for diplomatic and NGO families in Hanoi. Learn what each qualification is and how universities in the UK, US and Europe read them. See what happens if your posting ends in the middle of Year 12, which Hanoi schools offer each pathway, and when an American AP route makes sense as a third option. The decision framework is neutral and built around your posting schedule.

The IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) is a single two-year qualification. Students take six subjects plus a core of Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service), and the diploma is scored out of 45. A-Levels are separate subject exams, usually three or four, each graded A* to E. Universities in the UK, US, Europe and Asia commonly accept both. Oxford's Department of Computer Science, for example, publishes the two offers side by side: A*AA, or 39 IB points.

Why it matters if you're posted. For diplomatic, UN and NGO families, the more pressing question is usually whether a programme will survive your posting schedule, not which one is harder. A two-year course that breaks halfway through a rotation can cost more than a few points either way.

What you need to start. You need three things:

  • your posting end date and likely next country,
  • your child's probable university destination, or a shortlist of two,
  • the curriculum each Hanoi school offers in the final two years: Year 12 and Year 13, or Grades 11 and 12 in the US system.

If the US is a realistic destination, the American AP route belongs on the table too.

Key takeaways

  • The IB is one integrated diploma. A-Levels are stand-alone subjects, each with its own grade.
  • Leading universities typically publish offers for both.
  • Comparing the IB pass rate (82.61%) with the A-Level A*–E rate (97.5%) won't tell you which is harder. One measures a whole diploma; the other measures single subject results.
  • If you're posted, your timeline often matters as much as, or more than, a programme's reputation.
  • For US-bound students, an American diploma with AP is a legitimate third option.

In the May 2026 session, the global average IB Diploma score was 30.88 out of 45, up slightly from 30.58 in 2025, and 82.61% of candidates earned the full Diploma. Roughly one candidate in six did not.

Proven data · Source: Tes, IB results 2026

In summer 2026, 97.5% of A-Level results were graded A*–E, 28.5% were A*–A (up from 28.3% in 2025), and 9.6% were A*. These figures count individual subject results, not complete qualifications.

Proven data · Source: JCQ Level 3 press notice 2026

Those two headline rates look far apart, but they measure different things. The IB figure is the share of candidates who earned the full diploma. A student can do well in five subjects and still miss the diploma if one requirement falls short. The A-Level figure counts individual subject results. A gap of about 15 percentage points can't show you which programme is "easier". The more useful question is what your child's target university asks for, and whether your child can realistically deliver it in that format.

Start With Your Posting Map, Not the Curriculum

Most curriculum guides open with teaching philosophy. If you're on a 24–36 month posting, start with the calendar. Both the IB Diploma and A-Levels run for two years, and both are usually hardest to interrupt in the second year, when internal assessments, the Extended Essay and university predicted grades all land at once.

The three posting scenarios that change the answer

Your posting ends before the two-year programme starts. The qualification probably won't be decided in Hanoi. Pick whatever is easiest to continue in your likely next country, which means finding out which curricula the schools in your next capital actually run.

Your posting ends during the two-year programme. This is the highest-risk scenario, and most of this article is about it. The route with the fewest breaking points is often the safer one: the same programme available at the next posting, the same Higher Level subjects, the same exam board. That said, a low-risk route that doesn't suit your child is its own kind of risk.

Your posting runs past graduation. You have the most freedom. Choose on your child's academic profile and university destination.

A simple decision matrix

University Target Next posting: IB schools common Next posting: British schools common Next posting unknown
University: UK IB or A-Levels A-Levels IB or A-Levels
University: US IB or AP A-Levels or AP AP or IB
University: undecided IB A-Levels, with a broad subject mix IB

Use the matrix to start the conversation; it won't settle it on its own. If you're weighing the American route, our companion guide on AP in Hanoi looks at how it compares when a move is likely.

Posting Map Pathway Finder

Answer four questions to see which senior pathway carries the least risk for your family's posting schedule.

1. When does your current Hanoi posting end?
2. Which schools are most common in your likely next posting?
3. Where is your child most likely to attend university?
4. Which best describes your child right now?

Please answer all four questions.

Questions to ask your HR or posting office first

Before you commit, put three questions to HR:

  • Can the posting be extended so your child sits their final exams in Hanoi?
  • Will the organisation support boarding, or a parent staying behind?
  • What does the education allowance cover: tuition alone, or registration fees, exam entry and transport as well?

The answers can shape the decision as much as anything in a curriculum comparison.

What Happens If You're Reassigned Partway Through the Programme?

Transferring within the IB

Moving between IB schools is possible, but nothing about it is automatic. The new school has to offer the same subjects at the same level (HL or SL). Its timeline for internal assessments and the Extended Essay has to line up with where your child is. And the school has to be willing to take a student mid-programme. Get all of this confirmed in writing by the destination school's DP coordinator before you agree a posting date.

PRO TIP TỪ TRUE NORTH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL: Don't just ask a prospective IB school whether it offers your child's subjects. Ask for its option-block timetable. Many schools group subjects into fixed blocks, so two subjects can each appear on the course list and still clash on the timetable. Before you leave Hanoi, also build a "transfer pack": the latest drafts of every Internal Assessment, the Extended Essay draft and supervisor comments, and an export of the CAS portfolio from the school's platform (many IB schools use systems such as ManageBac). Request it in writing during your notice period. Gathering these files after you've left is far slower, and the receiving DP coordinator will use them to decide whether a mid-programme place is workable.

Transfer Pack Checklist

Everything to collect before your child leaves their current school. Gathering it afterwards, from another country, is far slower. Your ticks are saved in this browser.

Continuing A-Levels abroad

Because A-Levels are examined subject by subject, a student can sometimes carry on as a private candidate at a Cambridge or Pearson exam centre, even in a country where no local school teaches them. The catch is practical. Subjects with heavy coursework or lab work are much harder to complete outside a school, so check each subject separately.

PRO TIP TỪ TRUE NORTH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL: Exam centres set their own deadlines and rules for private candidates, and entry often closes months before the exam session. As soon as a new posting is even likely, contact two or three centres in that city. Ask three things: whether they accept private candidates for your child's exact board and syllabus codes, whether they can handle any coursework or practical component, and what the late-entry deadline and fee are. A syllabus that matches at board level but differs in code or options can leave a student unable to sit the right papers.

Predicted grades after a mid-year move

UK university applications lean heavily on teachers' predicted grades. A teacher who has known your child for six weeks has very little to go on. Bring a full assessment record from your Hanoi school, and ask your child's previous teachers to put in writing the grades they would have predicted.

When exams themselves are disrupted

If you're posted to an unstable region, it helps to know how the IB has handled disruption. In 2026, students in the Middle East received IB results based on coursework and teacher assessment because exams couldn't go ahead normally. One case doesn't make a rule. It does suggest that a strong internal assessment record can help protect a student when external exams fall through. The IB decides these arrangements case by case, so don't assume the same approach will apply in every crisis.

In 2026, IB students in the Middle East received their results through coursework and teacher assessment when exams could not run normally. For families posted to unstable regions, a strong record of internal assessment works as a safety net.

IB Course Certificates as a safety net

If finishing the full diploma becomes impossible, students can still be awarded IB Course results for individual subjects. Universities read these differently from the full diploma, so treat them as a fallback rather than a plan.

How Universities Read IB vs A-Levels

UK

UK universities commonly publish offers in both formats. Oxford's Department of Computer Science, for example, normally asks for A*AA at A-Level, or 39 IB points including the core, with 7-6-6 at Higher Level and the 7 in Maths. The two offers sit side by side. What counts as the equivalent of AAA, or any other offer, varies by university and course, so check each target university's admissions page instead of relying on a conversion chart.

Oxford's Department of Computer Science normally offers A*AA on three A-Levels, or 39 IB points including core points with Higher Level grades of 7-6-6 and the 7 in Maths. The two qualifications are set side by side; neither is penalised.

Proven data · Source: University of Oxford, Department of Computer Science

You may come across a widely quoted claim that IB students are 57% more likely to get into a top-20 UK university than A-Level students. Read that as a correlation. In the UK, IB students come disproportionately from independent schools and well-off families, and both of those factors predict university outcomes in their own right. There's another plausible explanation too: schools that offer the IB may simply provide stronger university guidance, which would produce the same pattern whatever the qualification. It's not a sound basis for choosing a programme.

A London school head has cited studies claiming IB Diploma graduates are 57% more likely to attend a top-20 UK university than A-Level students. Treat this with caution: it shows correlation, not cause, and IB students in the UK disproportionately come from independent schools and well-resourced families.

United States

US universities generally don't require any particular curriculum. They look at how demanding a student's courses were, the grade trajectory, essays, activities and context. Strong IB Higher Level or A-Level results may also earn university credit, depending on the institution.

PRO TIP TỪ TRUE NORTH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL: US applications typically ask for records from every secondary school attended from Grade 9 onward, along with each school's "school profile", the document that explains its grading scale and course rigour to admissions officers. For globally mobile students, these are the documents most often missing in senior year. Before every move, request an official sealed transcript, the school profile and a short counsellor contact note, and store digital copies. Recovering records from a school overseas two years later can take weeks you won't have in application season.

Continental Europe

Some European systems set subject-combination rules for foreign qualifications. Check the official admissions portal for each target country before your child picks subjects, because a missing subject can be harder to fix than a missing point.

Vietnam

For Vietnamese-heritage families in the NGO sector, whether IB and A-Level qualifications count for entry to Vietnamese universities depends on current Ministry of Education and Training regulations and on each university's own admissions policy. Check directly with your target universities by Year 11 (Grade 10), before subject choices are locked in.

Match the Programme to Your Child, Not the Brochure

Specialists vs all-rounders

A student already set on engineering, medicine or fine art may do better going deep in three subjects. A student who hasn't decided often gets more out of the IB's breadth, which speaks to the common worry that A-Levels are "too narrow". A well-chosen spread of four A-Levels across different fields can keep plenty of doors open, though.

Newly arrived, still adjusting

Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS are worthwhile, but they pile on work in the same months a child may be getting used to a new country, school and friendship group. Some children take this in their stride; others struggle. If your child is arriving in Hanoi at the start of Year 12, talk frankly with the school about whether they can manage the load.

English still developing or learning support needs

Ask each school exactly what adjustments it offers in the final two years: subject level choices, support staff and exam access arrangements. General statements in a prospectus won't tell you enough.

Keeping the Mother Tongue: IB vs A-Level Languages

For Indian, Korean, Chinese and dual-national families, keeping the home language going often matters more than they say out loud. The IB lets students study their home language at literature level, including through a school-supported self-taught route where no teacher is available, and offers a Bilingual Diploma. A-Level exams exist for many languages, but availability depends on the exam board and on whether your school or a local centre can run them. Check both by Year 11 (Grade 10).

Contra View: "IB Is Always the Default for Globally Mobile Kids" Is Not Always True

The IB's reputation as the "expat curriculum" is largely deserved: it's widely offered in international schools across many countries and marked on one global scale. But a qualification that travels well isn't the same as a two-year programme that transfers well. A mid-programme move still depends on two specific schools matching on subjects, levels and assessment timelines. A-Levels, examined subject by subject, can occasionally be finished more easily through an exam centre when no suitable school exists.

The evidence often used to promote the IB deserves a closer look too. As noted above, the "57% more likely" figure is a correlation.

And if your child is set on US universities, neither the IB nor A-Levels is required. An American high school pathway with AP courses may carry less transfer risk between American schools worldwide, as long as the new school runs the same AP courses. The catch: if your child later switches to the UK or Europe, offers there are generally written with IB and A-Level applicants in mind.

In many cases, the IB is still a strong default for undecided, globally mobile students. For specialists, students mid-transfer or families with a firm US destination, a different route can be the safer bet.

Which Hanoi Schools Offer IB DP and Which Offer A-Levels (2026–27)

School Senior pathway (as reported) Note
UNIS Hanoi IB continuum (PYP, MYP, DP) Long-established; strong UN and diplomatic community
Hanoi International School (HIS) IB MYP and IB DP Authorised IB World School
Hanoi Academy IB Often cited as a lower-fee IB option
BVIS Hanoi British curriculum with A-Level Bilingual British–Vietnamese model
BIS Hanoi Sources conflict (IB DP or A-Level) Confirm directly with the school
True North International School American curriculum with AP Does not offer IB DP or A-Levels

This table draws on third-party school guides, which aren't always up to date. Confirm each school's senior offer directly before you draw up a shortlist.

Fees and your education allowance

Fees for the final two years at Hanoi's premium international schools are substantial and vary by school and year group. Third-party guides list indicative ranges, but schools review fees every year. Ask each school for a full fee schedule, including registration, capital levies, exam entry and transport, then compare it, line by line, with what your education allowance will reimburse.

Waitlists and timing

Popular schools can have waitlists for senior year groups. If your posting dates aren't fixed, apply to more than one school, ask about refundable deposits, and ask directly whether mid-year entry into Year 12 is possible.

Diversity check

Ask how many nationalities there are in Year 12 and Year 13 specifically, not across the whole school. A healthy school-wide figure can hide a senior cohort drawn largely from one community.

The Third Option: An American High School Diploma With AP

If your child is likely to apply to US universities, or you expect to move between American-curriculum schools, an American high school diploma with Advanced Placement courses is worth a serious look. AP courses are individual subjects with a common external exam, so they're fairly easy to continue between schools, provided the new school offers the same courses. The limitation is that UK and European universities often set specific conditions for AP applicants, such as several high AP scores, and those requirements vary widely.

True North International School is an American-curriculum school in Ha Dong offering AP courses. It has held Cognia System Accreditation since 2022, and its graduates receive a US high school diploma. We don't teach the IB Diploma or A-Levels, which is precisely why we encourage families to compare all three routes on their merits. Our guide to AP in Hanoi goes into more detail.

What Changed in 2026

The May 2026 IB session produced a global average Diploma score of 30.88, up slightly from 30.58 in 2025, with a pass rate of 82.61%. A-Level results published by JCQ on 13 August 2026 held steady: 97.5% of results at A*–E (unchanged), 28.5% at A*–A (up from 28.3%) and 9.6% at A* (up from 9.4%). The IB also put contingency arrangements into practice, awarding some Middle East students results based on coursework and teacher assessment.

An 18-Month Decision Checklist for Posted Families

  1. 18 months before the two-year programme starts: Map your posting end date, likely next countries and two candidate university destinations.
  2. 15 months before: Ask HR what the education allowance covers and whether the posting can be extended through exam years.
  3. 12 months before: Shortlist Hanoi schools by senior pathway and apply to more than one.
  4. 9 months before: Check which curricula schools in your likely next posting offer.
  5. 6 months before: Choose subjects against the entry requirements of your target universities.
  6. At every move: Collect full assessment records and ask current teachers for written predicted-grade statements.
COSTLY MISTAKES POSTED FAMILIES MAKE:
  • Choosing Higher Level subjects only for Hanoi: Check that your child's three HL subjects are also offered at likely schools in the next posting. An HL subject that cannot continue is often the real reason a transfer fails.
  • Assuming the allowance covers everything: Deposits, capital levies and exam entry fees are sometimes reimbursed differently from tuition, or not at all. Get your HR office's answer in writing before paying a non-refundable deposit.
  • Agreeing a move date without checking the exam calendar: A departure a few weeks before May exams or internal assessment deadlines can cost far more than a short posting delay. Raise exam dates with HR when the move date is first discussed, not after it is fixed.
  • Leaving references until the last week: Ask current teachers to draft university references and predicted-grade statements before you announce your departure, while they still have full context and time.

IB Diploma vs A-Levels: Quick Answers for Diplomatic and NGO Families

What should a family do if a diplomatic posting ends halfway through the IB Diploma?

Contact the IB Diploma Programme coordinator at schools in the new city before agreeing a move date. Confirm that the school offers the same Higher Level and Standard Level subjects, that its internal assessment and Extended Essay timelines match, and that it accepts mid-programme entrants. Bring drafts of all internal assessments, the Extended Essay and the CAS portfolio. If no compatible school exists, ask whether the student can finish at the current school or receive IB Course results for individual subjects.

Can a student finish A-Levels without a school after moving countries?

Often yes, as a private candidate at a Cambridge or Pearson exam centre, but not always for every subject. To troubleshoot:

    • Check that the centre accepts private candidates for the exact board and syllabus code.
    • Ask whether it can handle coursework or practical components.
    • Register before the entry deadline, which can be months ahead of the exams.

Subjects with heavy coursework are the most likely to cause problems.

How do UK universities compare IB Diploma scores with A-Level grades?

UK universities publish separate offers for the IB Diploma and A-Levels, and neither qualification is penalised. For example, Oxford's Department of Computer Science normally asks for A*AA at A-Level, or 39 IB points including core points with Higher Level grades of 7-6-6 and the 7 in Maths. Equivalences vary by university and course, so families should check each target university's admissions page rather than relying on a generic conversion table.

Is the IB pass rate lower than the A-Level pass rate because the IB is harder?

No. The figures measure different things. In May 2026, 82.61% of IB candidates earned the full Diploma, a single award that requires every component to be completed. In summer 2026, 97.5% of A-Level results were graded A*–E, but that figure counts individual subject results, not complete qualifications. The two rates cannot be compared directly to judge difficulty.

Do US universities prefer the IB Diploma, A-Levels or AP?

US universities accept all three and require none of them. Admissions officers assess the rigour of the curriculum a student took at their school, along with grades, essays and activities. For a student certain about US universities, an American high school diploma with Advanced Placement courses is a strong option and easy to continue between American schools. It is less flexible if the student later applies to UK or European universities, which write offers mainly for IB and A-Level applicants.

What records should a globally mobile student collect before changing schools?

Before leaving any school, a student moving internationally should collect:

    • an official sealed transcript and the school's profile document,
    • predicted grades and teacher statements,
    • drafts of coursework or IB internal assessments, the Extended Essay and the CAS portfolio,
    • counsellor contact details.

US applications typically require records from every secondary school attended from Grade 9. Recovering them from an overseas school later can take weeks.

How should diplomatic families in Hanoi choose between the IB Diploma and A-Levels?

Start with the posting timeline, not the curriculum's reputation. If the posting ends before Year 12, pick the programme easiest to continue in the next country. If it ends mid-programme, choose the route with the fewest breaking points: same programme, same Higher Level subjects, same exam board. If it runs past graduation, choose on the student's academic profile and university destination. In Hanoi, UNIS and Hanoi International School offer the IB Diploma, BVIS offers A-Levels, and True North offers an American diploma with AP.
