AP (Advanced Placement) is a program of courses equivalent in difficulty to first-year university study, paired with standardized exams, designed by the College Board (USA) for high school students. AP is not a diploma. Each subject is a separate course with its own exam, scored on a scale of 1 to 5.
AP gives students three advantages. First, qualifying scores (usually 3 or higher, though many universities require a 4 or 5) can be converted into college credit, allowing students to skip general education courses. Second, AP courses on a transcript show admissions committees that the student deliberately chose a challenging curriculum. Third, some international universities in Vietnam use AP scores in admissions and scholarship decisions.
To get started, parents need to do three things:
Identify target universities and look up each one's AP credit policy.
Choose 1–2 first courses linked to the intended major.
Find a school with specialist AP teachers that is also a College Board–authorized test center.
Exams take place in May, but the College Board's final ordering deadline is 13/11/2026, and schools usually close their lists earlier than that.
Every autumn, at international school admissions fairs in Hanoi, parents hear a whole string of acronyms at once: AP, IB, A-Level, SAT, WASC. Some sound like qualifications but aren't. Some sound alike yet lead down very different paths. Parents don't lack information. The hard part is that every piece of it sounds reasonable, while deciding what a Grade 9 or Grade 10 child should study commits the family to 3–4 years of tuition and is almost impossible to undo.
AP is often presented as a shortcut: study university material early, earn credit exemptions, graduate early. That is true, but only under specific conditions. This article walks through what can actually be verified about AP: what it is, what it really delivers, who should choose it, and when the promises made about AP no longer hold up.

5 questions, about 1 minute. Results are an initial guide only.
What Is AP? A Precise Definition in One Minute
Advanced Placement (AP) is a program designed and administered by the College Board. High school students take courses with content equivalent to first-year university study, then demonstrate their mastery through a standardized exam held every May.
There are currently around 40 AP courses, spanning Mathematics, Science and Economics through to the Arts and World Languages. Students choose individual courses rather than a fixed package.
Is AP a Course or an Exam? Is It a Qualification?
AP is both: a year-long course taught at school and an end-of-course exam. AP is not a graduation diploma. Students still need a high school diploma, whether from the Vietnamese system or a WASC-accredited international program. AP scores complement that diploma; they do not replace it.

What Does the AP 1–5 Scale Mean?
AP exams are scored on a 1–5 scale. The College Board considers a 3 "qualified," and this is also the most common threshold for credit. Even so, the final decision rests with each university.

The AP Capstone Diploma and AP Scholar Awards
Among AP awards, the AP Capstone Diploma is the closest thing to a "diploma." Even so, it is only a supplementary College Board credential and does not replace a high school diploma. Students who score 3 or higher in both AP Seminar and AP Research receive the AP Seminar and Research Certificate. Those who also score 3 or higher on four additional AP exams receive the AP Capstone Diploma. Both awards are reported to universities as AP Scholar awards.

4The university decides on creditEach university has its own policy
The College Board does not award credit. An AP score only becomes credit when your child's university accepts that score.
What Is AP Worth? Measured in Three Numbers: Credits, Semesters, Scholarships
The number of courses listed on a transcript is not the measure of AP's value. A clearer measure is concrete outcomes: how many credits your child is exempted from, how many semesters are cut, and whether scholarships increase. Without answers to these three questions, it is hard to know how much real benefit AP delivers, beyond showing that your child chose a demanding curriculum.
What AP Score Earns College Credit?
The College Board does not award credit. Each university publishes its own policy, by subject and by score. Parents should use the AP Credit Policy Search tool on the College Board website as soon as they have a list of target universities, rather than waiting until Grade 12.
Type of university
Common AP policy trend
Large US public universities
Often accept scores of 3 or 4 for many subjects
Highly selective private universities
Usually require scores of 4–5; some use AP only for placement and award no credit
International universities in Vietnam
Case by case; may grant course exemptions or admissions priority
PRO TIP FROM TRUE NORTH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL: When reading a university's AP policy, don't stop at "accepts a score of 4." Check how that credit is actually recorded. At many universities, AP credit counts only as elective credit and cannot replace required courses in the major. Some universities also cap the total number of AP credits they recognize, so a seventh or eighth AP course may not earn any additional credit. Students aiming for pre-med in the US need to be especially careful: many medical schools prefer prerequisite courses (Biology, Chemistry) to be taken at university level, so using AP to skip them can sometimes be a disadvantage. The quickest way to check is to email the admissions office or the registrar with a specific question: "Which course does a 5 in AP Biology convert to, and does it meet the requirements of major X?"
Does AP Really Help Students Graduate on Time?
For students who reach the credit threshold, yes. Large-scale quantitative data confirms this:
EVIDENCE
A regression discontinuity analysis of more than 4.5 million students found that reaching a credit-granting AP score increases the probability of earning a bachelor's degree within 4 years by 1–2 percentage points per exam.
This data has a specific scope: it comes from students in the US education system. For Vietnamese students studying abroad, the impact depends on the credit policy of the receiving university.
In the natural sciences, using AP credit to skip introductory courses also does not leave students with gaps in foundational knowledge:
EVIDENCE
A study of 48,230 students at 6 large public universities found that students who used AP scores to skip introductory Biology performed just as well in the next course as those who did not; in Chemistry and Physics, the students who skipped actually achieved higher results.
This study only examined Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Its statistical methods could also only control for measurable characteristics, so motivation may still have contributed to the strong results of the group that skipped introductory courses.
AP in Common App Applications and US Scholarships
AP courses on a transcript show admissions committees that the student chose a demanding curriculum (academic rigor). Admissions counselors commonly observe that committees read a transcript against what the student's high school offers, to see whether the student took the most challenging courses available to them.
This is counseling experience, not a formula published by universities. AP strengthens an application, but it cannot replace the essay, extracurricular activities or SAT scores. According to figures published by True North, in the most recent admissions season the school's students received a combined total of around US$3,000,000 in scholarships and financial aid from US universities. This figure reflects students' entire applications (academic record, essays, activities, financial circumstances), not AP scores alone.
Do Universities in Vietnam Accept AP for Admission?
Yes, but each group of universities uses AP scores differently.
Group of universities
How AP scores are used
Notes
International universities (RMIT, BUV, Fulbright)
Direct or conditional acceptance; may grant course exemptions
Fulbright uses holistic admissions with no fixed score threshold
Private universities (VinUni, FPT)
A basis for scholarship decisions and admissions priority
VinUni uses its own criteria and does not use national high school exam scores
Top public universities
Combined admissions, often alongside IELTS or an interview
Admissions schemes change every year; check each admissions season
EXPERT OPINION
According to a summary by Vinschool, more than 650 universities outside the US recognize AP credit from a score of 3/5, and high AP scores are an advantage when applying for scholarships at VinUni and Hanoi University of Science and Technology. Parents should also cross-check each university's official admissions scheme.
Usually not much, if handled correctly. On the Common App, self-reporting AP scores is optional for many universities, so students can report only their strong scores. The College Board's official score report, however, sends all AP scores, so timing matters when sending it. In counseling experience, a single low score usually does less harm than taking too many courses and scoring low across the board.
PRO TIP FROM TRUE NORTH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL: Each year, the College Board gives students one free score send, provided they select a recipient university in their My AP account before the deadline (usually around mid-June). This free send is a double-edged sword, because the official report sends all AP scores, including low ones. For Grade 9–11 students who have not finalized their university list, the safe approach is to skip it. Scores remain stored in the system, and students can send a paid report once their target universities are clear. During the application stage, most US universities only require self-reported scores. The official report usually only needs to be sent to the university the student decides to attend.
Credits
How many credits can your child be exempted from?
Illustrative example
A first-year course at a US university usually carries 3–4 credits. If the university accepts a 4 in AP Calculus AB, your child may be exempted from the corresponding introductory Calculus course.
Semesters
How many semesters can your child cut?
Illustrative example
A full-time semester in the US is usually around 15 credits. If 4–5 AP courses are converted, the total credits may equal one semester, provided the university allows them to be used to shorten the degree.
Scholarships
Will your child's scholarships increase?
Illustrative example
AP scores do not convert directly into scholarship money. They are one part of the application: according to Vinschool's summary, high AP scores are an advantage when applying for scholarships at VinUni and Hanoi University of Science and Technology.
These examples are illustrative only. Actual credit conversion is decided by each university, so parents need to check the policies of their target universities.
AP, IB or A-Level: Choose by Destination, Not by Trend
No program ranks above the others. AP is a set of independent courses and exams, the IB Diploma is an all-in-one program, and A-Level sits in between, with in-depth study of a small number of subjects. So the first question parents need to ask is where their child wants to go to university.

Can You Switch If You Choose Wrong?
Yes, but the later you leave it, the more it costs. Grades 9–10 are the easiest time to switch. From Grade 11, IB and A-Level lock students into a two-year pathway, so switching programs almost means starting over. Here AP has an advantage: because each course is independent, students can add AP courses alongside another program, while the reverse is much harder.
How Many AP Courses, and Starting in Which Grade?
More is not better. Both research and College Board policy point toward stopping at a moderate number.
The Law of Diminishing Returns
College Board data shows that the benefits are concentrated mainly in the first few AP courses:
CORRELATIONAL
After controlling for SAT scores and high school GPA, better college outcomes were most clearly associated with the first and second AP courses. Taking more than 5 AP exams was not associated with any significant change in first-year grades or graduation rates.
This is correlational data. The figures show a trend; they do not prove that a sixth AP course is useless for every student. Bear in mind, too, that the research only measures outcomes after students enter university, not their chances of admission. At highly selective universities, the number of AP courses may still affect how a committee judges the rigor of an application.
The College Board itself has adjusted in this direction: it has stopped awarding the distinctions that encouraged students to take as many AP exams as possible.
A Suggested Pathway from Grade 9 to Grade 12
Based on True North's experience, starting in Grade 9 with one manageable course can help Vietnamese students gradually adjust to the pace of university study, instead of cramming several courses into Grades 11–12, right in the middle of application season. Grade 9 students vary widely in readiness, so the starting point should depend on each student's actual ability. True North states that it is the first school in Vietnam to teach AP from Grade 9, with more than 15 AP courses and dedicated exam-prep sessions for each.

PRO TIP FROM TRUE NORTH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL: For students heading into Engineering, the name of the AP course matters as much as the score. Many engineering schools only grant Physics credit for AP Physics C (which uses calculus), while AP Physics 1 often counts only as elective credit. Similarly, if your child is strong in Math, consider AP Calculus BC instead of AB. The BC exam includes an AB subscore, so one exam produces two results for universities to refer to. Note that students cannot take both AB and BC in the same year, so the course needs to be decided at the start of the school year.
Does AP Overload Vietnamese Students?
It can, especially when courses are chosen to follow the crowd. Adjust if you see these signs: grades in core subjects slipping, your child dropping all extracurricular activities, or your child memorizing for the exam instead of understanding the material. At True North, AP pathways are personalized alongside more than 20 clubs such as VEX Robotics and debate, so that study doesn't take over students' entire school life.
Costs, Exam Schedule and Deadlines for 2026–2027
For a single course, the AP fee is not large. But added up across 5–8 exams over several years, it becomes a significant investment. And the deadlines allow no exceptions.
AP Exam Fees for Students Outside the US
According to international counseling providers, the AP exam fee outside the United States is around US$146 per exam (compared with US$98 within the US), excluding the test center's administrative fees. Parents should confirm the exact fee with the school's AP coordinator.

Can Self-Studying Students Take AP Exams, and Where in Hanoi?
Yes. Students do not have to take an AP class to sit the exam, but they must register through a school authorized by the College Board as an AP test center. In Hanoi, True North is an official AP and SAT test center, so external candidates can contact the admissions office to ask about exam places.
COMMON MISTAKES INDEPENDENT CANDIDATES MAKE WHEN REGISTERING FOR AP EXAMS:
Treating 13/11 as their own deadline: 13/11 is the deadline for test centers to order exams from the College Board. Each test center has an earlier internal deadline, usually in September or October, to allow time for processing. Independent candidates should contact a test center at the start of the school year.
Assuming every test center offers every subject: Each test center only administers the subjects it has ordered. If they choose a less common subject, independent candidates need to check whether the school accepts external candidates for that subject before spending a whole year self-studying.
Forgetting ID on exam day: Candidates testing at a school other than their own usually need to present government-issued photo ID (a passport or citizen ID card). Confirm the specific requirements with the AP coordinator when registering.
Never having taken a test on Bluebook: Independent candidates don't have a class in which to practice digital exams with a teacher. Download Bluebook onto a personal device and take the official practice tests, especially for hybrid subjects, because the handwritten free-response section requires very different time management from an exam done entirely on paper.
AP Exams on Bluebook: The Biggest Change Vietnamese Students Haven't Noticed
From the 2027 exams, all AP exams move to a digital format. Bluebook is the digital testing platform shared by AP and the SAT. Students take the exam on a device provided by the school, and throughout the exam the app blocks all other access.
Format
How students take the exam
Example subjects
Fully digital
Both multiple-choice and free-response sections are completed in Bluebook
AP English, History subjects, AP Psychology, AP Macroeconomics; from 2027, also World Languages and AP Statistics
Hybrid digital
Multiple-choice on screen, free-response handwritten
AP Calculus AB/BC, AP Physics, AP Chemistry, AP Biology
Portfolio
Work submitted via the AP Digital Portfolio
AP Art and Design
In 2026, 16 exams are fully digital and 12 are hybrid. The Desmos calculator is built into every exam that allows a calculator, so students need to practice with Desmos, not just with a handheld calculator. The multiple-choice sections of AP English Language and Literature have also been reduced from 5 to 4 answer options per question.
The 2026–27 school year adds two new courses in the AP Career Kickstart group: AP Business with Personal Finance and AP Cybersecurity. From 2027, exam start times change in some regions to prevent exam content leaking across time zones, so students in Vietnam need to check their specific exam schedule.
The Rarely Discussed Downside: When AP Isn't Worth What It's Advertised to Be
Any discussion of AP that skips its downsides is incomplete. There are three limitations parents should know before investing.
Credit Is Not Automatic
The authors of a study in the Journal of Educational Research note that a growing number of universities are reluctant to grant credit for scores of 3 or 4. In their view, this suggests that AP scores and university course grades may not fully align. So the promise of "saving a year of tuition" only holds once it has been checked against each target university's policy.
Most Positive Research Is Correlational
Not every researcher is as optimistic about AP as the College Board:
EXPERT OPINION
According to a review by the University of Colorado, evidence that AP shortens time to degree has remained fragmented and unconvincing for more than 40 years. The review also notes that the College Board has a direct interest in promoting AP.
Students who choose AP are often already strong and motivated, so their success in university cannot be attributed entirely to AP. This does not negate the causal studies cited above. It simply means that AP's impact is real, but more modest than it is usually advertised.

How to Evaluate an International School's AP Program
Of all the numbers international schools put forward, the number of AP courses is the most misleading. In True North's experience, AP delivers its clearest value when it is taught as a university course by subject-specialist teachers, rather than drilled as an exam. Parents can bring the table below with them on school visits.

The figures above are self-reported by schools and reflect a specific school year. High pass rates can also be influenced by admissions intake and by how a school decides which students sit the exams. Parents should therefore ask to see the AP school score summary and also ask what proportion of AP students actually sit the exam.
Three Questions to Ask Before Choosing AP
AP is worth the investment when parents can answer three questions. Where does your child want to go to university? Which AP scores does the target university recognize, and at what level? Is your child ready to start with their first 1–2 courses?
If all three have answers, AP is one of the most flexible ways for Vietnamese students to get used to the pace of university study while still in high school. If not, the first step should be a pathway consultation, before the 13/11/2026 ordering deadline for the May 2027 exams closes. Parents can register for a campus tour and a 1-on-1 AP pathway consultation at truenorth.edu.vn. The entrance assessment at True North is free of charge.
AP Quick FAQ
My child scored a 3 on an AP exam, but the target university doesn't grant credit for it. What should we do?
A 3 is the passing threshold for AP (Advanced Placement) exams, but each university decides which scores it converts into credit. If the university does not recognize a 3:
Check whether the university uses that score for placement, even if it doesn't award credit.
Consider retaking the exam the following year. The College Board counts only the highest score for AP Scholar awards.
Still report the score in the application, because AP on a transcript still shows the student chose a challenging curriculum.
We missed the 13/11/2026 AP ordering deadline. Can my child still take the exam?
Yes. 13/11/2026 is the College Board's main ordering deadline for the May 2027 AP exams. After that date, many test centers still accept late orders, but with a late fee of US$40 per exam, and only within the window the school allows. Contact the test center's AP coordinator right away to ask whether there are still places for the subject and what the final payment deadline is. The longer you wait, the more likely the test center has already closed its list.
My child's school is not an AP test center. Where can they take AP exams?
Students can still take AP exams even if their own school is not an AP test center. They register as external candidates at another school authorized by the College Board to administer AP exams. In Hanoi, True North International School is an official AP and SAT test center. Parents should contact a test center in September or October, confirm that it offers the subject your child needs, and prepare photo ID for exam day.
My child isn't used to taking AP exams on a computer with Bluebook. How should they prepare?
From 2027, all AP exams are digital via the Bluebook app, the same platform used for the SAT. Effective preparation:
Download Bluebook and take the College Board's official practice tests.
Practice with the built-in Desmos calculator, not only a handheld calculator.
For hybrid subjects (Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, Biology), practice switching between on-screen multiple-choice and handwritten free-response.
Practice reading long texts on screen, since this differs from reading a paper exam.
Studying AP alongside the Vietnamese curriculum is overloading my child. How should we adjust?
AP (Advanced Placement) courses are first-year university level, so taking too many at once easily leads to overload. Three signs call for adjustment: grades in core subjects dropping, your child giving up all extracurricular activities, or your child memorizing rather than understanding. What to do:
Reduce to 1–2 AP courses per year, prioritizing those linked to the intended major.
Drop AP courses that don't serve university goals.
Remember that College Board data shows college outcomes barely improve beyond about 5 exams.
My child scored a 1 or 2 on an AP exam. Should they retake it?
Retake it if the subject is directly linked to the intended major, or if the target university grants credit for that subject. There's no need to retake an elective outside their intended field. A low score in one subject does little harm, because students decide which universities receive their official score report. On the Common App, students can also choose to self-report only their strong AP scores. When a subject is retaken, the College Board counts the highest score for AP Scholar awards.
We're not sure whether our child will study in the US or the UK. Should we choose AP, IB or A-Level?
If you haven't settled on a country, the IB Diploma is the safe choice because it is widely recognized worldwide. AP suits students aiming for the US or Canada best. A-Level suits students aiming for the UK best. AP has one particular advantage: each subject is an independent course and exam, so students can add AP alongside another program without switching schools. Grades 9–10 are the easiest time to change direction. From Grade 11, IB and A-Level lock students into a two-year pathway, so switching programs almost means starting over.
Regression discontinuity study of more than 4.5 million students: reaching a credit-granting AP score increases the likelihood of earning a bachelor's degree within 4 years by 1–2 percentage points per exam
