Preparing a Grade 10 Student for an IB Diploma Start After a Mid-Year Move.
Posted On: 22 October, 2026
Preparing a Grade 10 student for an IB Diploma start after a mid-year move to Hanoi: gap maps, HL choices, Math AA vs AI, EAL and a term-by-term plan.
A Grade 10 student who arrives mid-year should use the months before the August IB Diploma intake to close three gaps:
Curriculum: what they’ve studied versus what the new school expects for each DP subject.
Placement: which subjects to take at Higher Level (HL) or Standard Level (SL), and whether to take Math AA or AI.
Belonging: friends and routines in place before DP marks start to count.
Start with four steps: collect documents from the old school, meet the DP coordinator, build a written gap map, and only then decide on tutoring.

Verified data · May 2026
The global IB Diploma average reached 30.88 out of 45 in May 2026, up from 30.58 in 2025. The pass rate was 82.61%, so roughly one candidate in six did not earn the diploma.
A mid-year move can feel like lost time. In practice, the months before August are the only stretch where nothing yet counts towards the diploma, and much of what happens in them shapes how DP1 begins.
Beyond the quick answers, you’ll find a gap map template, a document checklist, a calendar estimator and a term-by-term plan you can use this week.
A word on who wrote this. True North International School teaches an American curriculum with College Board AP courses; we are not an IB World School. So this guide has no DP place to sell you. What it offers is a method for turning a disrupted Grade 10 into a strong start.
What must happen before the August DP start?
Four things come first: documents, a meeting with the coordinator, a gap map and subject decisions. Do them in that order.

SAI LẦM CẦN TRÁNH KHI NHẬN CHỖ HỌC GIỮA NĂM:
Accepting a seat before seeing subjects in writing: A confirmed place is not a confirmed DP package. Ask for the provisional HL/SL list and the option blocks in writing before you pay a deposit.
Leaving document checks until after the move: Ask early whether the school needs translated or certified copies. Arranging them from your home country is usually far quicker than from Hanoi.
Summer tutoring from old-curriculum textbooks: Revising the previous system's syllabus reinforces the wrong sequence. Use the gap map as the tutor's brief.
Can a mid-year arrival still start the IB Diploma in Hanoi?
Often, yes. Families arrive in and leave Hanoi all year, so international schools do open seats mid-year. But each school controls its own admissions, timetable and English-language support.
Are seats and EAL places still available mid-year?
Often, but English-language (EAL) support is usually the bottleneck. Newer schools, Dwight School Hanoi among them, tend to have more room for mid-year arrivals.
Expert guidance · 2026
According to a 2026 Hanoi admissions guide, mid-year entry is realistic because expatriate families arrive and leave all year. The guide also warns that English-support (EAL) places are capped per class, so students who need EAL should apply first.
Can a student start the DP without the MYP?
Yes. The MYP isn’t a requirement for DP entry. What the DP coordinator looks at is subject foundations and academic English, not whether a student holds an MYP certificate. Ask each school for its written DP admission policy.
What do DP entrance assessments test?
Most check English reading and writing, readiness for maths, and motivation. Some schools run the assessments online before you arrive.
Don’t cram. An inflated score can land a student in a maths course they can’t keep up with.
What is a gap map, and why does it drive every decision?
A gap map is a written table comparing what your child has studied with what each DP subject expects. It brings curriculum mismatches to the surface before they show up in DP1 grades.
Without one, you’re deciding on assumptions. With one, HL choices, tutoring and bridging all aim at specific missing topics.
A gap map shows topics, though, not depth of understanding. The DP coordinator’s own assessment still matters.
Which documents should you bring from the old school?
Bring evidence of what was taught, not just grades. An “A” doesn’t tell a coordinator whether your child has studied logarithms or titration.

The Foreign Service Journal makes a related point. It recommends a digital portfolio of coursework, assessment history and documented accommodations, so the new school can pick up where the last one left off.
If you’re coming from India, note that CBSE Class 10 board results may arrive after Hanoi course-selection deadlines. Bring pre-board and mock results.
PRO TIP TỪ TRUE NORTH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL: Before you leave the old school, ask each core-subject teacher for one line in writing: "the last unit we completed, and the date". For a student moving between school calendars, this single detail tells a DP coordinator more than a full transcript. While you're there, collect a short reference letter from the current counsellor or homeroom teacher. International-school staff move on often, and a letter that is easy to get in March can be impossible to find in DP2 when a university asks for context.
LƯU Ý QUAN TRỌNG VỀ ACCESS ARRANGEMENTS:
Disclose learning needs at admission, not after: Leaving out a learning-support report to strengthen an application often backfires. Exam access arrangements are requested by the school and must be backed by evidence.
Arrangements must reflect normal classroom practice: Extra time or a word processor in final exams is far easier to justify when the student has been using it in class from DP1. Ask the school to start using the arrangement in DP1, not in the exam year.
Check that reports are current and in English: Reports from abroad may need translating or updating. Ask the coordinator what the IB will accept before the first DP1 assessments.
What did “Grade 10” actually cover back home?
That depends on the calendar. A student from a school year that starts in March or April may arrive having covered only part of what an August-start student has.

Worked example (an illustrative scenario, not a real student): Min-jun arrives from Seoul in March, just after his Korean Grade 10 has started. His gap map shows strong algebra, no statistics and no experience of extended essays in English. The coordinator suggests Math AA at SL rather than HL, English B rather than A, and a writing plan for the summer. The table didn’t make those decisions. It gave the family and the coordinator something concrete to decide with.

Your draft is saved only in this browser on this device. Nothing is sent to True North or anyone else. This tool supports your conversation with the school; final subject eligibility is decided by the receiving school's DP coordinator.
How should a new student choose HL and SL subjects?
Choose for fit, not prestige. What your child can take at HL depends on what they covered in Grade 10, and a new student has to choose before teachers really know them.
PRO TIP TỪ TRUE NORTH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL: Ask the DP coordinator for the school's "option blocks" before you plan any subject package. Most schools timetable DP subjects in fixed blocks, so two subjects in the same block can't be taken together. A combination that looks perfect on paper, such as Chemistry HL with Economics HL, may simply be impossible at that school. Build the gap map around the blocks, not around a wish list.
Why does subject fit matter more than subject prestige?
HL courses ask for far more depth and time than SL. In our view at True North International School, an HL load picked to impress universities, rather than built on real foundations, is a common reason strong students struggle in DP1. That’s a professional judgement, not a measured statistic.
Other things play a part too: academic English, settling into a new school, and the combined workload of six subjects. Moving one subject down to SL won’t fix every case.
Put subjects with no major gaps at HL. Keep SL for subjects your child is still catching up in, or trying for the first time.
Math AA or Math AI: how do schools place a new student?
Math AA needs a firmer grounding in algebra and functions than Math AI does. Coordinators place students on the evidence of that grounding, and on the courses they plan to apply for at university.

What if the new school doesn’t offer your child’s home language?

PRO TIP TỪ TRUE NORTH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL: If your child will study their home language as a self-taught Language A, find the outside tutor yourself before August. Don't assume the school can source one for Korean, Hindi, Japanese or German in Hanoi. Then ask the coordinator whether a second Language A could lead to the IB bilingual diploma. Many families keep the home language only out of loyalty, without realising it can also earn formal recognition.
Can a student switch HL subjects after the DP starts?
Usually, but only in a short window early in DP1. Each school sets its own deadline, so get the change policy in writing before course selection.
Why do 2027 DP starters begin on level ground?
Several DP courses are being revised at once. A Grade 10 student who starts the DP in August 2027 will be in the first cohort taught the new maths courses.

On the new maths syllabi, students already at IB schools have no head start on content. They may know IB-style assessment better, but that’s a narrower gap, and summer practice helps close it.
Further ahead, the IB plans to add a Systems Transformation Pathway to the DP by 2030. It won’t affect a 2027 starter.
What do the Personal Project, EE, TOK and CAS mean for a non-MYP student?

Use the summer to close the research gap. Have your child write one short, referenced paper on a topic they love.
Will a disrupted Grade 10 hurt university applications?
It can, but you can limit the damage. Much depends on where your child applies.
Predicted grades rest mostly on DP work, especially DP1, though each school sets its own process. Internal assessments also count towards final subject grades. US applications work differently: colleges using the Common App see transcripts from Grade 9 onwards, so a disrupted Grade 10 stays visible.
Expert opinion
Writing in The Foreign Service Journal, the author argues that joining the DP late, or transferring partway through, can create serious academic and college-application problems. The article recommends that transition planning begin as early as grade 9.
A counsellor’s letter explaining the move gives admissions officers the context they need.

How can you help a new teen belong before DP1?
Treat belonging as part of academic preparation. Isolation can affect how a student copes with the two hardest years of school. Academic struggles after a move can also come from curriculum gaps or the strain of studying in a second language. Watch for both.
Research on third culture kids is still thin. A 2022 systematic review in Frontiers in Psychology found only 14 eligible studies on how relocated children adjust, 10 of them quantitative.
Correlational study
A cross-sectional study of 143 internationally relocated children and teens, aged 7–17, tested whether resilience and family functioning mediate the link between relocation stress and adjustment. Because of its design, the findings show association, not proven cause.

If you feel guilty about the move, put that energy into practical support. Guilt rarely helps a teenager settle; steady routines are something you can actually control.
Our parent community at True North includes Vietnamese, Korean, Indian and German families. In published feedback, a Korean parent described Vietnamese and Korean students playing together easily, and a German parent singled out the close bond between students, teachers and parents.
Counterpoint: should your child start the IB Diploma right away, or at all?
Not always. For some students who move, waiting a year or taking another route works better. Here’s the case against rushing.
When is repeating Grade 10 or a Pre-DP year the smarter move?
Our rule of thumb: consider it when the gap map shows gaps in three or more intended subjects, or when academic English isn’t ready yet. A Pre-DP bridging term is designed to soften the jump in workload at the start of DP1.
Single school's experience
A former IB educator writes that at the IB school where they worked, most students who switched schools were encouraged to repeat DP Year 1. Their advice: move at least a full year before the DP begins. This reflects one school's practice, not a general rule.
That’s one school’s practice, not a rule. An extra year can cost less than a failed diploma, but it also means another year of fees and a later start at university. Weigh both.
When are AP, A-Levels, the IBCP or course certificates safer?
When another move is likely, or when a student’s strengths are narrow. Not every DP student has to aim for the full diploma; course certificates are a recognised alternative. The full diploma is among the least forgiving routes for a student who has to move partway through.

This is where True North International School’s own route fits. Our curriculum follows CCSS and NGSS, with College Board AP courses included in International-programme tuition. Our first Grade 12 cohort received offers from more than 30 international universities, including Cornell, UCL, Melbourne and Sydney, along with USD 3,000,000 in US scholarships and AUD 80,000 in Australian scholarships.
That doesn’t make AP better than the IB. One cohort’s results show that a second credible path exists, not that it suits every student. If you’re weighing both, our comparison of AP in Hanoi and the IB looks at which holds up better when another posting is on the cards.
Why can heavy pre-DP tutoring backfire?
A tutor may teach topics in a different order, or with different methods, from the receiving school. Wait until the DP coordinator confirms the subject package, then tutor only the gaps on the map.
What happens if you have to move again during DP1 or DP2?
Students can transfer between IB World Schools, but it’s up to the receiving school whether to accept a transfer candidate. Schools also set their own subject offers, and may teach the same course in a different order.

What do the IB Diploma years cost, and what’s really at risk?
Fees vary widely between Hanoi schools and year groups, so ask each school for its published fee schedule. The bigger risk isn’t the fee itself. Paying for two DP years and ending up with course certificates instead of the full diploma is one of the costliest outcomes to avoid.
For comparison, True North publishes its full fee structure:

F&Q
My child arrived in Hanoi mid-Grade 10 and the IB Diploma subject deadline is only weeks away. What should we do first?
Act in this order. Waiting usually costs more than any of these steps.
Collect transcripts, syllabi and marked work from the old school.
Book a meeting with the new school's IB DP coordinator.
Write a subject-by-subject gap map: what was covered, what each DP subject requires, and what is missing.
Agree on a provisional set of Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL) subjects before course selection closes.
Arrange tutoring only after the subjects are confirmed.
The new IB school says my child's preferred HL subject combination isn't possible. What can we do?
Most IB schools timetable Diploma subjects in fixed "option blocks", and two subjects in the same block can't be taken together. Ask the DP coordinator for the block grid. Then look at three options:
Take one of the subjects at Standard Level instead of Higher Level.
Swap in a related subject from another block.
Check whether the school offers online DP courses for the missing subject.
Choose based on university entry requirements, not on which subjects sound impressive.
My child studied maths in a different national sequence. How do we avoid the wrong IB maths placement?
The IB Diploma offers Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA), which is algebra- and calculus-heavy, and Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI), which focuses on statistics and modelling. Placement depends on algebra and functions skills, not on grades alone. Bring maths syllabi and recent tests to the DP coordinator. Check which course your child's target universities expect. If the gaps are in functions or logarithms, fix them before August rather than starting AA HL behind. Revised AA and AI courses start in August 2027, with first exams in May 2029.
The new school doesn't teach my child's home language. Can they still earn the IB Diploma?
Yes, in most cases. There are three common routes:
Fluent speakers may take school-supported self-taught Language A Literature at Standard Level. The family usually arranges an outside tutor.
Students with some prior study of a language the school offers can take Language B.
Complete beginners can take an ab initio course.
Language A is assessed as literature; Language B is assessed as language acquisition. Confirm before August that the school will register a self-taught candidate.
My teen is struggling socially after an international move and grades are slipping before the IB Diploma. What helps?
Treat belonging as part of academic preparation. Practical steps:
Join one club and one sport in the first two weeks.
Ask the school for a student buddy.
Keep one family ritual from home.
Arrange weekend time with classmates' families.
Research on internationally relocated children links family functioning and resilience to better adjustment. These studies show association, not proven cause. If low mood or isolation lasts beyond the first term, involve the school counsellor early. Don't wait for DP1 grades to drop.
We may be posted to another country within two years. Is the full IB Diploma still the right choice?
Possibly not. The full IB Diploma requires six subjects plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS across two continuous years. Transferring mid-programme depends on the receiving school accepting the student and offering matching subjects. More portable options:
IB course certificates, where each subject is recognised separately.
A US high school diploma with AP courses, where each AP exam result stands on its own.
A-Levels, for students focused on three or four subjects.
Decide before DP1 starts, not after the posting is announced.
Our child's school records are late, incomplete or in another language. Will this block IB Diploma entry in Hanoi?
Usually not, but it slows placement. Each IB school sets its own admission policy, and coordinators need evidence of what was studied. To fix the gap:
Ask former teachers to email the last unit completed in each subject.
Submit mock or pre-board results while official results are pending.
Get key documents translated into English.
Ask early whether the school needs certified copies.
Complete records help the school place your child correctly, not just admit them.
