Choosing an International School Near Tây Hồ vs Ciputra: What Expat Families Should Weigh
Posted On: 26 October, 2026
Choosing an international school near Tây Hồ vs Ciputra? This expat guide compares commute times, curricula (IB, British, American AP), 2026-27 fees, hidden costs, waitlists, air quality and neighborhood life, and explains why choosing the school before the lease protects your child's daily routine, university pathway and your family budget.
Choosing an international school near Tây Hồ or Ciputra is less about two districts than about two ways of living. Ciputra sits inside what used to be Tây Hồ district, and since Hanoi's ward merger on July 1, 2025, most of it falls under Phú Thượng ward. Three schools operate inside the township: UNIS Hanoi, Singapore International School @ Ciputra and Hanoi Academy.
The decision most families get wrong is the order. Sign the lease first, and you may lock your child into the wrong curriculum. Choose a school across the city without testing the route, and your child could spend hundreds of hours a year on a bus.
Start with three steps:
Shortlist schools by curriculum and your child's next move.
Get the full first-year cost and waitlist status in writing.
Test the school run at 7:00 a.m. before you sign a lease.
Along the way, you'll get a commute-cost formula, a hidden-fee table and a seven-point checklist to run before you sign a lease. Kiều Trọng Tú put this guide together from 2026 fee schedules, Hanoi infrastructure reports and accounts from expat parents.
Key takeaways
Ciputra is part of the Tây Hồ area, not a separate district.
For most families, the curriculum comes first, the school second and the lease last.
Budget your child's commute time alongside tuition.
The real first-year bill is higher than published tuition.
Promised bridges and metro lines are no reason to sign a three-year lease.
Is Ciputra Part of Tây Hồ? Two Lifestyles, Not Two Districts
Yes. Ciputra (Ciputra Hanoi International City, officially the Nam Thăng Long urban area) belongs to the Tây Hồ area. The more useful comparison is a busy lakeside village versus a planned, gated township.
How did the 2025 ward merger change the address?
Hanoi removed the district level of government on July 1, 2025. Most of Ciputra now falls under Phú Thượng ward, and a small eastern section belongs to Tây Hồ ward.
Older guides still say "Tây Hồ District," but new lease contracts and school forms use the ward name. Check that all your documents match.
What does daily life look like in each area?
Tây Hồ appeals to families who want cafés and street life. Ciputra appeals to those who want space and quiet.

Which schools do online guides misplace?
Several "best neighborhoods" guides list Hanoi International School in Tây Hồ. Its campus is actually at 48 Liễu Giai, Ba Đình. Check a campus address on a map before you plan a route around it.
Which schools outside Tây Hồ and Ciputra deserve a look?
Yes, when the curriculum fits better. True North International School operates at Lot TH-03, Mỗ Lao Urban Area, Hà Đông. It isn't near Tây Hồ or Ciputra, and its case rests on curriculum fit, not location.
The school teaches an American curriculum built on the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for math and English language arts, the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), STEAM and College Board AP courses. ACS WASC accredited all grade levels in May 2024, and the school is a member of EARCOS, the East Asia Regional Council of Schools.
How Much Does the Daily Commute Really Cost?
Treat the commute as a hidden cost and budget it alongside tuition. It plays a big part in whether a home and a school actually work together.
Use this formula:
Daily round-trip minutes × 180 school days = hours on the road per year
[[EDITOR | MODULE: School Run Calculator — so sánh 2 phương án nhà-trường, tính số giờ đi lại mỗi năm và trong cả thời hạn thuê nhà, đối chiếu mức trần theo tuổi]]
A 45-minute ride each way adds up to 90 minutes a day, or 270 hours over a school year. That's more than 11 full days.
How long is the school bus ride at rush hour?
You won't get a reliable number without testing it. Map apps don't account for school-gate queues or bridge bottlenecks. One admissions guide recommends testing bus times across the Red River bridges at rush hour before you settle on a school and a home. Do a dry run at 7:00 a.m. on a weekday.

What is a sensible commute budget by age?
Younger children cope with less time in a vehicle. One parent on an expat forum wrote that her toddler started vomiting after about 15 minutes in a car. It's a single case, but carsickness can shrink your realistic radius fast.

Can expat children walk or bike to school in Hanoi?
For the most part, only inside Ciputra. In Tây Hồ, parked scooters often block the sidewalks. Across Hanoi, school buses are still a niche option.

Will the Curriculum Travel With Your Child?
For most families, curriculum fit should lead the decision, because your child's next school and university applications depend heavily on it. The exception is a family whose housing is already fixed (see the section on when the closer school is the smarter choice). Start with an "exit test": where will your family be living in two or three years?

What should families on 2–3 year postings watch?
Grades 10–12 are the danger zone. Avoid moving halfway through a two-year diploma cycle. Because AP courses run as single-year courses, completed courses can often carry over after a move, depending on the receiving school's policy. Many US colleges grant credit or placement for qualifying AP scores, although policies vary from college to college.

Where does True North fit, and where doesn't it?
True North suits families heading to US or Canadian universities, and returning Việt kiều (overseas Vietnamese) families whose children grew up in the American system. It offers two tracks: International and Bilingual (following Vietnam's national program).
According to the school, its first graduating class, which finished Grade 12 as the school marked its fifth year, received offers from more than 30 international universities, including Cornell, UCL, the University of Melbourne, the University of Sydney, Pratt and Berklee. The class also earned about USD 3,000,000 in US scholarships and AUD 80,000 in Australia. The school reports International-track SAT scores of 1550/1600 in 2023 and 1570/1600 in 2024. These results come from one cohort and are reported by the school, so they also reflect individual students' abilities and family support, not the curriculum alone.
An Indian parent noted clear progress in their child's soft skills, arts and presentation skills. The leadership team has extensive international experience: Principal Gerald Schoen has led schools for more than 23 years in the US, Mexico, Korea, China and Thailand.
If your next posting is at an IB or British-system school, an IB or Cambridge school here may make the transition smoother. Pick the curriculum that fits where you're going next, not the school's name.

What Do International Schools Really Cost in Hanoi for 2026–27?

What should you ask HR about your education allowance?
Ask four questions before you choose a school:
Does the allowance cover one-time fees, or only tuition?
Does it cover the bus and meals?
Is there a cap per child?
Does it stop mid-year if the posting ends early?
If you're paying yourself, compare the total first-year cost, not tuition alone.

Should You Choose the School First or Sign the Lease First?
Choose the school first whenever you can. Waitlists play a big part in when it's safe to sign a lease, and signing first risks paying for a home near a school that has no place for your child. That said, employer deadlines and the rental market sometimes force your hand. If they do, protect yourself with the lease terms below.
Do Hanoi international schools have waitlists?
Some year groups do, especially at popular schools. UNIS Hanoi opened applications for 2026–27 in mid-January 2026, for a mid-August start. Newer schools often have room in year groups that are full elsewhere, so ask each school for its current waitlist by grade.
What sequence avoids lease regret?

Shortlist two or three schools.

How "International" Is the Classroom?
Ask every school for its nationality mix. Vietnamese law caps local enrollment at some schools, but not all of them.
Decree 86/2018, amended by Decree 124/2024, requires foreign-invested schools to keep Vietnamese students below 50% of enrollment. Bilingual schools that follow Vietnam's national program operate under different rules. A school's legal status is one factor in its classroom mix; location, fees and admissions policy matter too.

How Does Hanoi's Air Quality Affect School Choice?
Air quality matters most from October to May, when poor winter air cuts into outdoor time at most schools.

Which Area Suits Toddlers and Which Suits Teenagers?

Ciputra may feel too quiet for teenagers who want to see friends without needing a driver. Families with both toddlers and teens face a genuine trade-off.
When Is the Closer School the Smarter Choice?
Sometimes proximity beats the best-fit curriculum. It depends on how much flexibility you really have.
If your housing is fixed and your children are young
If your company assigns housing in Tây Hồ or Ciputra, or a parent works nearby, a good school close to home usually wins, because you pay the commute cost every single day. For these families, a school in Hà Đông, True North included, is unlikely to be the practical choice.
Don't sign a 3-year lease based on promised infrastructure
Metro Line 2 is planned to link Ciputra with Hoàn Kiếm. Construction started on October 9, 2025, on a line of nearly 11 km with 10 stations. Its completion date has already slipped about 14 years from the original 2009–2015 plan.
Tứ Liên Bridge will connect Tây Hồ with Đông Anh. Work began in May 2025, and the bridge is targeting technical opening around October 2027. By mid-2026, it was only about 14% complete and behind its revised schedule.
Treat both projects as possible future benefits, not reasons to sign a lease.
The "expat bubble" trade-off
Life inside a gated township can limit how much contact children have with Vietnam. A school with many Vietnamese students isn't automatically a drawback if you want your child to understand the local culture. Ninh Thị Lâm Bằng, True North's Primary Principal and Bilingual Program Director, who has more than 18 years of experience, believes that with the right guidance, children don't just enjoy traditional culture; they learn to value it.

Choose the School, Then the Street
The strongest decisions usually follow a clear order: curriculum, then school, then street. Tây Hồ and Ciputra both work well for the right family. Get the order wrong, though, and it can cost you time, money and your child's momentum.
If an American curriculum with AP fits your child's next step and you haven't signed a lease yet, visit True North International School before you choose a neighborhood. Book a campus tour and a "Discover Your True North" assessment, and ask for the full fee schedule and bus route information.

FAQ: Choosing a School Near Tây Hồ or Ciputra in Hanoi
Is Ciputra in Tây Hồ, and which address should expat families use in 2026?
Ciputra (Ciputra Hanoi International City, the Nam Thăng Long urban area) belonged to Hanoi's former Tây Hồ district. Hanoi removed the district level on 1 July 2025. Since then, most of Ciputra falls under Phú Thượng ward, with a small eastern section in Tây Hồ ward. Use the ward name on leases, school forms and residence paperwork, and make sure every document shows the same address. Older guides that still say "Tây Hồ District" describe the same area under its former administrative name.
My child's school bus ride in Hanoi takes over 45 minutes each way. How can I fix it?
Fix the cause before you change schools:
Stop order: Ask the school whether your stop is first on and last off. Moving to a stop later in the pickup sequence can shorten the ride.
Alternative stops: Ask about a nearby stop on a faster route.
Afternoon ride: Check whether after-school activities are making the return trip longer.
Next lease: If none of this works, move closer to the school when your lease ends.
A long ride costs a child over 250 hours a year.
We already signed a lease in Ciputra, but our preferred school is across Hanoi. What are our options?
You have three realistic options:
Choose a nearby school: Pick a school within your child's commute tolerance and accept a weaker curriculum match. This usually suits young children.
Keep the distant school: Measure the real door-to-door time at 7:00 a.m. before committing. This can suit teenagers on a curriculum-critical pathway, such as AP or the IB Diploma.
Negotiate an early exit: Ask the landlord for an early-exit or sublet clause, then move closer to the school.
Decide by your child's age and how hard the next school transition will be.
How do I find the real first-year cost of an international school in Hanoi?
Ask each school for a written first-year total per child, not a tuition range. The total should include:
Application fee and placement test
Deposit, and its refund rules
Enrollment or development fee
Learning materials
Meals
Bus fees for your exact address
Uniforms
Exam fees (AP, IB or IGCSE)
Confirm the invoice currency (USD or VND) and the withdrawal refund schedule. Do not rely on aggregator websites, because their figures for the same school often conflict.
We may relocate again in two years. How do we protect a teenager's education in Hanoi?
Choose a curriculum that matches your likely next destination:
IB: suits IB schools and Europe.
Cambridge: suits British-system countries.
American with AP: suits the US and Canada.
Avoid moving in the middle of a two-year exam cycle, such as the IB Diploma or A Levels. AP courses are single-year courses, so finished courses keep their value. Each June, save course descriptions, report cards and the school profile, and keep control of your College Board account login.
How can I tell if an international school in Hanoi has the right classroom mix for my child?
Ask for the nationality breakdown of your child's specific grade, not the school-wide figure. Visit on a normal school day and watch break time, because the language children play in shows how well groups mix. Ask admissions to connect you with a current parent of your nationality. Also check EAL (English as an Additional Language) support if your child isn't a native English speaker. Under Decree 86/2018, amended by Decree 124/2024, foreign-invested schools must keep Vietnamese students below 50%, while bilingual schools follow different rules.
How should expat families handle Hanoi's air pollution when choosing a school?
Hanoi's air is worst from October to May. IQAir data show Vietnam's 2025 annual PM2.5 at 5.9 times the WHO guideline, with Hanoi the country's most polluted city. When comparing schools, ask three things:
Purifiers: Does every classroom have one, and how often are they maintained?
AQI policy: Is there a written AQI threshold that moves outdoor play indoors?
Indoor space: Is there a gym or covered sports hall?
Exposure during a long commute matters more than small differences between neighbourhoods, so a shorter ride also reduces pollution exposure.
