Cognia Accreditation: What It Means for Your Child’s Diploma (A Guide for Expat Families in Vietnam)
Posted On: 12 October, 2026
What does Cognia accreditation mean for your child’s diploma if your family may move again? This guide for expat and English-speaking families in Vietnam explains what Cognia does and does not cover. It shows how a diploma from a Cognia-accredited school is treated in India (AIU equivalence), Korea (12-year overseas track), Japan (MEXT eligibility), China and the US. It also covers how to verify a school’s status and which documents to secure before you leave Hanoi.
Cognia accreditation is an independent, whole-school quality review. Cognia is a US nonprofit and the parent organization of NCA CASI, SACS CASI and NWAC. It looks at how a school is led, how it teaches and how it improves. Then it accredits the school for a fixed term.
Cognia doesn’t issue diplomas, and it doesn’t set a curriculum. The school issues your child’s diploma. Accreditation is what gives universities, ministries and credential evaluators a reason to trust it.
Why it matters: it gives your child’s diploma a recognized quality signal when your family moves. Japan’s MEXT names Cognia as one of six qualifying accreditors. India, Korea and China each add conditions of their own.
What to do now:
Look the school up in Cognia’s official directory.

Quick Answer: Does a Cognia-Accredited Diploma Work in Your Home Country?
It depends on where your child is headed. Japan checks the accreditor’s name. India checks equivalence. Korea mostly counts years abroad. China checks residency.

What Cognia Accreditation Is (and What It Isn’t)
Cognia accredits the institution, not the course or the certificate. Get that one distinction right and most of the confusion goes away.
Accreditation, curriculum and diploma are three separate layers
School accreditation and curriculum are separate things. A Cognia-accredited school can teach the American curriculum, IB, Cambridge or a bilingual program.

Who Cognia is
Cognia was formed from AdvancED and Measured Progress. It’s the parent organization of NCA CASI, SACS CASI and NWAC, three of the historic US regional school accreditors.
By its own count, Cognia works with about 40,000 institutions in more than 100 countries. That number is self-reported. It tells you how far Cognia reaches, not how good any single school is.
How the accreditation cycle works
New schools start as members. They then have to meet Cognia’s Essential Requirements to earn initial accreditation. Membership on its own is not accreditation.
Each accreditation runs for a set term, and the school has to renew it. Older Vietnamese press releases from 2021 mention five-year terms. The school announcements we reviewed from 2025 and 2026 describe six-year terms, with a progress report due midway. Ask any school for its current term and renewal date.
Is Cognia accreditation recognized by US universities?
Cognia-accredited schools and US education guides report that US colleges broadly accept their diplomas. No federal rule requires colleges to.
The US Department of Education does not accredit schools. To verify a high school's accreditation, it directs families to the state education agency where the school is located.
Admissions offices judge each applicant on the school profile, the transcript and the rigor of their courses, such as AP. Accreditation makes the school profile more credible, but in practice the transcript and the profile do most of the work. A strong file from a well-documented school counts for more than any logo.
India: AIU Equivalence, NEET/JEE and the Online-Diploma Question
A diploma from an accredited American-pattern school abroad can be recognized in India. Your child will still need an AIU equivalence certificate.
Is a diploma from a Cognia-accredited school in Vietnam recognized in India?
In most cases, yes. Universities that follow AIU norms list a 12-year high school diploma from an accredited American-pattern school abroad as equivalent to the Indian +2 stage.
Two words matter here: “12-year” and “accredited.” Your child needs both. An older AIU list named US state education departments and the US regional accrediting agencies. Cognia is the parent organization of three of those regional accreditors.
PRO TIP FROM TRUE NORTH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL: A diploma alone doesn't prove how your child studied. Before Grade 12 ends, ask the school for a signed "Mode and Duration of Study" letter on official letterhead. It should state four things: the study was full-time and on-campus, the exact enrolment dates, the total years of schooling, and the school's accreditation status during those years. That letter closes the online-mode question before an evaluator raises it. Also check that your child's name is spelled exactly as in the passport on every transcript, diploma and letter. Middle names and surname order are the usual mismatches, and they are far easier to fix while your child is still enrolled.
Do you need an AIU equivalence certificate for Indian universities, NEET or JEE?
Yes, if your child studied under a foreign board. Maharashtra’s admissions guidance says students who passed Grade 12 from a non-Indian board need an AIU certificate, and that includes an American high school diploma.
For NEET, advisors commonly report that the AIU certificate is needed alongside a foreign diploma. Subject combinations matter just as much. Confirm both in the current NTA information bulletin.

Will AIU accept a US diploma earned online?
This is where families get caught out. An older AIU document stated that AIU did not accept high school diplomas earned online or through distance learning.
It’s one older document, and the rule may have changed since. Still, the risk is real. If India is a likely destination, an on-campus diploma is the safer choice. Check AIU’s current policy before you enroll in any online program.
Indian universities following Association of Indian Universities (AIU) norms recognize a 12-year high school diploma from an accredited American or American-pattern international school abroad as equivalent to the Indian +2 stage.
PRO TIP FROM TRUE NORTH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL: A diploma alone doesn't prove how your child studied. Before Grade 12 ends, ask the school for a signed "Mode and Duration of Study" letter on official letterhead. Korea: Do Vietnam Years Count Toward the 12-Year Overseas Track?
Usually, yes. Korean overseas admission depends mainly on how many years your child studied abroad and whether the documents check out, not on which body accredited the school.
How the 12-year track works
The 전교육과정 해외이수자 track requires all 12 years of schooling to be completed abroad. Sungkyunkwan University’s guide sets the minimum at 12 years, or 24 semesters, of regular schooling outside Korea.
PRO TIP FROM TRUE NORTH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL: Korean universities don't just count years. They count semesters you actually attended. Sungkyunkwan University's guide, for example, ties semester recognition to attendance measured against the school year's instructional days, using a 5/6 threshold. A long trip home during term, or a late start after relocation, can quietly cost your child one of the 24 semesters. Plan family travel around the school calendar. At the end of every semester, ask the school for an attendance record that shows instructional days and days attended, not just grades.
Schooling in Vietnam counts as schooling abroad. Each university, though, sets its own rules on overlapping semesters, skipped grades and differences in school calendars.
Two details trip families up. Some universities check that every school your child attended was a regular, licensed school in its country. Some also count a semester only if attendance reached a set threshold. Read the guide for each target university, and ask its admissions office to pre-check eligibility.
Sungkyunkwan University's overseas-schooling admission track requires applicants to have completed at least 12 years, or 24 semesters, of regular primary and secondary schooling abroad.

The 3-year track for families on assignment
Families on shorter assignments often use the 재외국민 track instead. It’s for students who lived abroad with a parent posted overseas for work or business. How many high school years abroad it requires varies by university.

Overseas schooling12 of 12 years (24 of 24 semesters)
What it means: all 12 years were completed abroad, so the 12-year track is likely open, provided each semester meets the university's attendance and regular-school rules.
Universities count semesters, not just years. Keep enrollment certificates with exact dates and an attendance record for every semester, from every school.

Apostille is not optional
Korean university guides require documents that are apostilled or verified by a consulate. That step is what makes a diploma usable across borders. Get it done before you leave Vietnam, and see the 2026 apostille update in the checklist below.
Japan: MEXT Eligibility and 帰国子女入試
Japan is the clearest case. MEXT recognizes Cognia as a qualifying accreditor for university entrance.
On the accreditor route, the name on MEXT’s list decides eligibility
NIC-Japan spells the rule out plainly. A student who completes 12 years at a school accredited by WASC, CIS, ACSI, NEASC, Cognia or COBIS is eligible for Japanese university admission, whether the school is in Japan or abroad.
Japan's NIC-Japan confirms that completing 12 years of education at a school accredited by WASC, CIS, ACSI, NEASC, Cognia or COBIS qualifies a student for admission to Japanese universities, whether the school is in Japan or abroad.
MEXT’s 2024 guidance lists the same six accreditors. If a school isn’t accredited by one of them, your child needs another route, such as the IB Diploma.
Always read the guide for your child’s entry year
University guides change from year to year. Nagoya University’s 2027 admissions guide names Cognia and COBIS alongside WASC, ACSI, CIS and NEASC. Always check the guide for the year your child will enter, not an older edition.
帰国子女入試 adds university-specific criteria
帰国子女入試 comes with extra conditions:
years spent abroad
language or exam scores
interviews
Accreditation gets your child an application. These criteria decide what happens next.
China: 华侨生联考 vs. the International-Student Route
For Chinese families, accreditation isn’t what decides admission. Eligibility for 华侨生联考 turns on residency status.
What decides eligibility in 2026
Summaries of the 2026 brochure describe strict rules on physical residence. Under one route, the student must have lived in the country of residence for at least 30 months in the five years before registration.
Chinese citizens who are abroad only to study don’t count as 华侨. The student also needs a high school completion from formal academic education. Always check the official brochure for the year your child registers.
PRO TIP FROM TRUE NORTH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL: Residency is counted in actual days, not in visa validity. A five-year residence card does not prove five years of living here. Start a simple spreadsheet now: every entry into and exit from Vietnam, for the student and for each parent, with dates. Keep scans of passport stamps and every temporary residence card (TRC). Summer months spent in China reduce the count, so check the running total every year, not in the spring you register. Families who reconstruct this log in Grade 12 often find gaps they can no longer close.
Foreign-passport, Chinese-heritage students
These students usually apply as international students. That route has residency conditions of its own, so check the current Ministry of Education notice before you plan.
Cognia accreditation alone won’t make your child eligible for 华侨生联考. Be wary of any school that suggests otherwise.
Staying in Vietnam or Moving to a Third Country
Your child’s diploma can be used in Vietnam and in third countries, but each one has its own process.
Staying in Vietnam for university
Under Circular 13/2021/TT-BGDĐT, the Director of the provincial or city Department of Education and Training recognizes foreign high school diplomas. If the department has to verify details with a foreign school, it takes longer, so start in Grade 12.
US, UK and Australia
Admissions officers here read the school profile and transcript closely, and they look at AP or IB results. Accreditation backs up the application, but grades and course rigor carry most of the weight.
Relocating mid-high school
If you move in Grade 10, the receiving school decides which credits transfer. Accreditation makes that easier, but it doesn’t guarantee every credit will carry over.
Keep these for every school year:
course descriptions
grading scales
transcripts

The Contrarian View: Accreditation Isn’t the Whole Answer
Accreditation is necessary. It’s rarely enough. Here are three cases where something else matters more.
The exam credential can matter more
Some systems look at the exam credential first and the accreditor second. For some families, an IB school without Cognia is a better fit than a Cognia-accredited school that awards an American diploma.
Pick the credential your destination recognizes most readily. If you're weighing AP against IB ahead of a possible next posting, our guide to AP in Hanoi compares the two.
For Chinese families, Cognia isn’t the deciding factor
The 华侨生联考 route turns on residency, and no accreditation can make up for a gap in residence.
Accreditation measures process, not outcomes
Cognia reviews leadership, learning culture and improvement. Its decisions focus on those processes rather than on where graduates go to university. As a result, accredited schools can produce quite different outcomes.
Ask every school for its school profile and its university destination data. True North International School publishes its own:

VERIFICATION MISTAKES TO AVOID:
Searching only the brand name: Directories often list a school under its legal entity or a former name, not its marketing name. If a search fails, try the former name and the legal name before assuming the claim is false. True North International School, for example, previously operated as True North School.
Checking once at enrollment: Status can change during your child's years at the school. Every August, take a screenshot of the directory listing with the date visible and save it in your document file. That builds a dated record of accreditation across every year of enrollment.
Missing the "system" accreditation detail: Some schools hold accreditation as part of a school system rather than as a single campus. Ask which campus or entity the certificate covers. Make sure it is the one that issues your child's diploma.
Not asking for a graduation-year letter: Some universities ask for proof of accreditation at the time of graduation. Request a letter at graduation confirming the school's accreditation during your child's enrollment years. It is much harder to obtain years later.
What if the school loses accreditation?
An active accreditation term at graduation is what supports the diploma’s credibility. A lapse during Grade 12 can weaken your child’s application. Ask the school how it would handle a lapse, and keep a copy of the certificate from every year.
Document Checklist Before You Leave Vietnam
Collect documents while the school still knows your child. Getting them reissued from abroad is usually slower and harder.

General guidance based on publicly available rules as of October 2026. Requirements change every year; always confirm with the university, ministry or credential evaluator.
Vietnam acceded to the Hague Apostille Convention on 31 December 2025. The Convention took effect for Vietnam on 11 September 2026, allowing eligible public documents, including diplomas and transcripts, to be certified with a single apostille instead of multi-step consular legalization.
What changed: Vietnam acceded to the Hague Apostille Convention on 31 December 2025. The Convention took effect for Vietnam on 11 September 2026, for member states that did not object. For many documents, one apostille now replaces the old multi-step consular legalization.
Where to apply: Vietnam designated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as the competent authority. That covers the Consular Department in Hanoi and the Department of Foreign Affairs in Ho Chi Minh City.
Diplomas qualify: Professional advisors list diplomas and transcripts among the public documents typically eligible for an apostille. A private international school's diploma may still need notarization or a certified copy first, so ask the Consular Department which version it will apostille.
Translation is separate: An apostille does not replace translation or notarized-translation requirements in the destination country. Budget time for both.
Check the receiving country: Implementation guidance was still being finalized in early 2026. Confirm with the destination university or embassy that it accepts a Vietnamese apostille before you skip legalization.

Graduates receive a US high school diploma from an on-campus program. That matters for the AIU online-learning question above.
Who leads it
Both senior leaders have worked across several school systems:
Principal Gerald Schoen has led schools for more than 23 years in the US, Mexico, Korea, China and Thailand.
International Program Director Robert Marto has served as a team leader for CIS and WASC accreditation visits.
The parent community
Families at the school come from Vietnam, Korea, India and Germany, and parents share named feedback on the school’s website. One Indian parent wrote about clear growth in their child’s soft skills, art and presentation skills.

Troubleshooting Cognia Accreditation and Your Child's Diploma
The school says it is Cognia-accredited, but I can't find it in Cognia's directory. What should I do?
Don't assume the claim is false yet. Cognia's online directory often lists a school under its legal entity or a former name, not its marketing brand.
Search the legal name, any former name and the city.
Ask the school for its accreditation certificate and term dates.
Check whether the accreditation covers the whole school system or a single campus.
If the school still does not appear, treat the claim as unverified. It may be only a member or candidate, or the accreditation may have lapsed.
My child took one year of online classes. Will India's AIU still grant equivalence for the US diploma?
It is a risk, so verify before your child applies. An older Association of Indian Universities (AIU) document stated that high school diplomas earned through online or distance mode are not accepted. Current practice may differ.
Ask the issuing school for a signed letter stating on-campus, full-time study, with exact enrolment dates and total years of schooling.
Contact AIU's equivalence section before the application season.
If India is the main destination, keep the final years of high school on-campus.
We moved schools mid-year. Will my child still meet Korea's 12-year overseas admission requirement?
Possibly. It depends on how many semesters are recognized. Korea's 12-year track (전교육과정 해외이수자) requires 12 years, or 24 semesters, of regular schooling completed abroad. Some universities, such as Sungkyunkwan University, also recognize a semester only if attendance met a set threshold.
Collect enrolment certificates and attendance records from every school, with exact dates.
Map the semesters on a timeline and look for gaps or overlaps.
Ask the target university's admissions office to pre-check eligibility before applying.
A Japanese university's admission guide doesn't list Cognia. Is my child ineligible?
Not necessarily. Japan's education ministry (MEXT) recognizes six international accreditors for university entrance eligibility: WASC, CIS, ACSI, NEASC, Cognia and COBIS. Some university guides update later than MEXT. Nagoya University's 2027 guide, for example, now names Cognia.
Read the guide for your child's exact entry year.
Email the admissions office citing MEXT's current accreditor list.
If the school also holds WASC or CIS accreditation, mention it.
We already left Vietnam without legalizing school documents. How do we fix it?
First, ask the Vietnamese school to issue fresh originals or certified copies of the diploma and transcripts. Vietnam joined the Hague Apostille Convention, effective 11 September 2026. Documents issued in Vietnam can now receive an apostille from Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs instead of going through consular legalization.
Ask the Ministry whether a representative or online submission is allowed for your case.
Confirm that the destination country accepts a Vietnamese apostille.
Arrange certified translations separately, because an apostille does not replace them.
What happens if the school loses Cognia accreditation while my child is in Grade 12?
Act quickly, because universities may check accreditation at the time of graduation.
Ask the school in writing for the reason, its timeline and its corrective plan.
Request a letter confirming accreditation status for each year your child was enrolled.
Save dated screenshots of the Cognia directory from earlier years.
Check whether the school holds a second accreditor, such as WASC or CIS.
Contact target universities early and explain the situation.
Japan is the most sensitive case, because MEXT eligibility depends on the accreditor list.
The name on my child's transcript doesn't match the passport. Will that cause problems?
Yes. A name mismatch can delay or block credential evaluation, apostille and university applications. Common errors include missing middle names, reversed surname order and spelling variations in Korean, Chinese or Indian names.
Ask the school to correct and reissue the transcripts, diploma and any letters so they match the passport exactly.
Fix it before graduation, while records are still active.
If a correction isn't possible, request a signed "one and the same person" letter from the school.
