What is Advanced Placement (AP) Program
The Advanced Placement (AP) program is designed by the College Board. In the US, approximately 5.2 million students are currently enrolled in this program at over 20,000 high schools.
The AP program offers 38 courses across 7 fields: Arts, English, History & Social Sciences, Math & Computer Science, Sciences, World Languages & Cultures, and AP Capstone. Students take AP exams held in May each year.
At True North International School, students have the opportunity to explore upto 14 AP courses spanning various fields such as History, Science, Chemistry, Music, Fine Arts, Economics, etc., taught by expert level teachers in these fields. With a disciplined academic environment and a high-quality teaching staff, True North students achieved an average AP score of 4.63/5 last school year. Principal Michael Lambert proudly highlighted this achievement at the Closing ceremony of academic year 2023-2024, and committed to maintaining an average AP score above 4.5 for all True North students.
Why Students Should Take AP Courses at True North International School
Enrolling in the AP Program and achieving high AP scores bring many benefits to the entire family.
The greatest benefit is the increased competitive advantage for future university applications. Good AP results demonstrate a student's ability to handle university-level workload, enhancing their chances of admission and scholarship awards. AP credits can also be recognized as university credits, saving families future costs and students time and effort. University admissions committees prioritize transcripts with AP scores, as these courses reflect a high level of academic commitment.
Additionally, students can choose AP courses and schedules that suit their preferences, thereby sparking their passion for academic fields, while still being able to join extracurricular activities such as arts, sports, community projects, and personal projects.
Upon graduating from high school with the AP program, in addition to an international standard high school diploma, students with outstanding average AP scores also receive prestigious certificates such as the AP Capstone, AP International Diploma, and AP Scholar with Distinction from the College Board, raising their competitiveness when applying to universities.
Furthermore, True North International School is officially accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) as an international standard school. The WASC accreditation assures that True North meets high standards of international quality, officially becoming a globally recognized education institution. With this accreditation, True North students enjoy numerous benefits:
- Widely recognized transcripts within the educational community. Graduating from True North International School with WASC accreditation adds credibility to students' academic achievements and capabilities.
- Ensured international standard education, including educational quality, faculty qualifications, student support services, and operational effectiveness.
- Save time and money when transferring credits to other schools within the WASC system and international universities, helping them reach their dream schools.
Thus, students in the International System at True North International School will benefit from both the WASC certification and additional advantages such as:
- The ability to earn up to 16 AP credits starting from grade 9, with 118 hours of free exam preparation with experienced teachers, helping students achieve the best academic progress, graduate with an average AP score of at least 4.5/5, and completed at least 4 AP courses.
- AP course fees are included in the International Track tuition, leaving only the exam fee (around $128) to be paid to the College Board.
- Support from a team of international admission consultants, ensuring a competitive edge, ready to apply to top universities and secure scholarships or financial aid.

Advanced Placement (AP) is a program in the United States created by the College Board. AP offers undergraduate university-level curricula and examinations to high school students. Colleges and universities in the US and around the world may grant placement and course credit to students who obtain qualifying scores on AP examinations.
The AP (Advanced Placement) program is a set of advanced courses with a difficulty level equivalent to first-year university level, designed for high school students. This program allows students to earn college credits while still in high school. AP courses and exams are widely offered in high schools and universities across the United States and are recognized by many universities worldwide.
Over the past few years we have tracked shifting policy language surrounding the use of AP scores in the college admissions process. We will continue to track these policies moving forward as we expect the role of AP scores in admissions to continue to evolve.
